Penzone called a press conference the day the ad was released, labeling it "100 percent false" and stating, "I will answer to anything and everything — and run from nothing."

Every local outlet covered the brouhaha, which also was picked up by the Associated Press and Salon.com.

The Arizona Republic's Laurie Roberts wrote that the Arpaio ad "smacks of desperation."

Paul Penzone scores positive media, thanks to the geniuses running Sheriff Joe's re-election campaign.

Paul Penzone scores positive media, thanks to the geniuses running Sheriff Joe's re-election campaign.

Even the Rep's E.J. Montini, not the brightest bulb in the cellar, seemed to understand that Penzone had been "Saban-ed" by Arpaio.

The controversy over the ad dovetailed with interviews Penzone had planned with news shows, scheduled for the week early voting kicked off. This allowed Penzone to address the allegations at length and to pivot, attacking Arpaio on a variety of subjects.

On Fox 10's Newsmaker Sunday, host John Hook seemed to take special umbrage at the fact that Arpaio and his aides had rejected numerous requests for the embattled sheriff (who's a TV hog when it only suits his purposes) to appear on the show, refusing to debate Penzone, or even to appear in a 15-minute segment on the same program.

"I pointed out that even the president of the United States is compelled to debate his challenger," said Hook, giving the entire half-hour to Penzone.

As in his other appearances, Penzone came across as honest and straightforward. I suspect that every time he appears in front of a camera, he wins a vote away from Arpaio.

Penzone spokeswoman Stacy Pearson called the timing of the attack ad's release "fortuitous" and explained that Penzone had received an outpouring of support as a result, including an increase in donations that allowed the campaign to top $500,000 in contributions to date.

She even described how one Republican in a business suit walked into the campaign headquarters Friday afternoon after the ad's release and wrote a check for the maximum amount allowed.

"He said, 'I saw the ad, I'm disgusted, and I'm here to write a check,'" she told me. "It was crazy."

Pearson also said the campaign was pleased with the fairness of the press coverage of the 2003 incident, with many outlets referring and linking to the actual Glendale police report.

She compared Arpaio's campaign to the hapless North Korean military.

"It's like the North Korean nuclear explosive," she said, referring to that nation's failed rocket launches. "It just dudded off into the ocean."

Nice analogy. Now if the voters will just do what they must and remove Maricopa County's own unstable dictator from office, then Willems, Arpaio, Blase, and Stauffer can all go fight for space somewhere under the same freaking rock.

Sounds like his wife has yet to move on from their marriage. She may want to get help with that.  She is only making herself look bad and stupid.  There are REAL women out there being abused,  and for her to even put herself in that category is shameful.  I am so tied of women crying foul like this when most times it ends up being as much their fault.  Why is it women think they can hit, punch or throw things at a man, but if he does it  it becomes abuse.  The truth is women who are truly abused don’t talk about it like this. Women who got a slap or a shove by a man, well they are out there in full force crying fowl.   It is really sad because these type of women, they make it hard on the real women that are abused, sacred, and crying for help.

People that love phoney Joe and  how he mispent money did not help abused kids and make taxpayers pay for lawsuits of people that died under his watch are just plain stupid.

Wow, this author really likes to call names.  My opinion:  Sheriff Joe and Donald Trump are the only ones with the guts to expose Obama's illegitimacy to be president.  And the Democrats are always on the side of the criminals.  (Ban guns for  honest folks so criminals can operate safely.  Don't execute that poor serial rapist/murderer.  It was his mommy's fault because she spanked him when he was a child.)  My motto:  You go, Joe!

If you don't believe that Penzone really was accused of beating his wife, go to the Maricopa County Superior Court and you'll find out for yourself.  So for all of you who falsely blame Arpaio for failed sex crime investigations, be assured that if Penzone is elected sheriff that he will surely ignore domestic violence prosecutions.  Just because he was not prosecuted does not erase the fact that he did it.

Arpio should talk about all the sex crimes he left unattended. I'm sure the victims would love to hear his reason for not showing up. Maybe because illegals were not involed.

Different election, same old tricks....The problem is that the truth does not matter to Joe Arpaio fans and followers. They will believe the information and rally around their savior in full force. He has used this strategy before with success. Like sheep they follow their leader into the abyss...

Lemons, I've always appreciated your skillful art of dissecting deserving political pundits with your words but I'm not really enjoying (or understanding) your recent swipes at Montini.  He's another writer who I appreciate and enjoy reading from.  Just curious what's behind the bitterness? It's tarnishing your otherwise notable work as a journalist in my opinion.

Joe could be beat but not by Penzone, come on 20 plus years with the phx pd and he only rose to the rank of Sargent. Either he had no ambition or he was too dumb to pass the promotional exams.

Is it legal for JoeArpaioFan to lift a photo or to impersonate an individual? Take a look for yourself. This is the photo JAF uses here:

Time to break up the "good ole boys" in the Maricopa County Sheriff's office. Paul Penzone will offer a much needed change. We will vote for Paul Penzone for Maricopa County Sheriff 2012.  Maricopa County and Arizona deserve better.

BTW - I have read the police reports a couple of times.  It sounds to me like Mrs. Penzone was putting some effort into aggravating Mr. Penzone and attempting in interfere with his court-approved visitation with his son.  Not blaming her for that per se - it really happens an awful lot when people are in the midst of the emotions of divorce.  However, they are most certainly NOT the actions of a woman who is afraid of her husband or who has been victimized.  Any woman who is really AFRAID of the man she is in a relationship with goes out of her way to keep him calm and not aggitated.  I get the impression that she tried to get him angry, she was successful, and that she knew that she was part of the problem rather than part of the solution, and that is why she did NOT call 911, did NOT call the police at all, and decided she needed to talk to HER ATTORNEY to find out what to do, and that she was ultimately grateful that her husband was not a violent man because that situation could have errupted into serious injury if he had not kept his cool.

You will note that the officer filing the report said that both Mr. and Mrs. Penzone told identical stories - up to the point where they were at the front door with the hockey sticks.  The only descrepancy is which came first - hockey stick smack or door push.

Both versions refute the Arpaio ad that he "hit her".

Shame on you Jospeh the Joke Arpaio and Chad the Pimp Willems.

Why do you say accused in this post but your web site falsely claims he was guilty of it? Changing your story again?

Arpaio did fail to investigate sex crimes, proven fact. Your inability to accept facts is well known though.

We can't forget his abuses of office and power.

And what about the $104 million he misspent?

Who could forget about Adrian Cruz, the child rapist who simply walked out of MCSO custody and vanished like a damn ghost?

And the lawsuits. Oh the lawsuits!

@JoeArpaioFan  @truthseekeraz  Better to be flooded with illegal aliens than being flooded with the badged criminals who now flood Maricopa county.

Remember Marty Attencio, the mentally ill, NAKED man that it took EIGHT of Jaffy's heros to control (murder)? This is an example of the abusive, corrupt law enforcement people like Jaffy admire.

In Maricopa county, most of the little punk bitches aren't wearing pink underwear(although I'm not so sure about Jaffy), they're wearing MCSO badges.

@BnbkI am always on a roll!  You didn't see me on Saturday night.  I was pissed and everyone knew it!   I find it disgusting that Arpaio and his side kick would exploit domestic violence for the sake of political gain.

What pathetic lies they tell.

(Bnbk - long story short, I was in a 4 year relationship with an abusive man...  I KNOW what domestic violence is, and this 10 second temper tantrum is NOT what I consider domestic violence, and for Arpaio and his winged monkeys to exploit this family is atrocious!)

@truthseekeraz I'm with you on the crazies. We should have facilities to house the mentally ill; insane asylums, sanatoriums, whatever the caring nurturers want to call them. I don't know where the money will come from, start by taking away anything at all that illegal aliens get and then take the rest of the money needed from rich people, I don't care where it comes from. If that dead mentally ill guy had been in restraints, medicated into a semi-coma and safely housed in a padded room somewhere, he'd still be alive today.

@wherewasi Put your money where your mouth is.  First of all Sheriff Joe was telling the truth because it is a proven fact that Penzone was involved in a domestic violence altercation with his wife,  is it not okay for candidates to tell the facts or just not okay for Arpaio to do that?  Personally I find it despicable that Penzone used Anchor Babies that lose their families when any person that commits a crime and goes to jail will be separated from their families.  Maybe somebody should start teaching Anchor babies how to say "daddy get legal".

I agree. My father was an abusive person and I saw it from a childs point of view towards myself and my mom and sister. I think it's part of why I went into Law Enforcement and later to volunteer at DV shelters for adults and kids. It's a horrible thing for anyone to go through.

I also draw the line at the mutually combative situations too. I have never raised my hand to a woman in anger in my life and never would, but I have no problem treating a woman like an equal truly if she decides she wants to stand toe to toe with me so to speak.

I used to hate it when responding to a DV call that you know the woman was the instigator and was deliberately attempting to provoke the guy into doing something stupid just so they would have an excuse to have them arrested. There was very little we were allowed to do then since in Texas (where I was at the time) it's a mandatory arrest of the male, the officer has no discretion.

You should right a blog/site about your experiences and share them with others so they know they are not alone. As I am sure you are aware, just knowing that it can be not only survived but that the person(s) can get out of a bad situation and move forward is one of the best medicines and motivators someone in that situation can have.

wherewasi

 @Flyer9753  @Bnbk

I despise any person - Arpaio, Willems, Blase - ANYONE who exploits the plight of women and/or children who are victims of abuse.

I do draw the line at "mutually combative situations".  I have known MANY women who go out of their way to try to draw their spouse/bf into an altercation for the purpose of having them arrested.  That's just plain dumb.  It's asking for trouble.  Fortunately, most of those situations mellow out.

I could do my own blog on domestic violence.  This pathetic "realpenzone" site would not be included.
