If the eggheads at NASA ever decided to send another compilation of tunes into the far reaches of the universe (à la the "Music From Earth" collection that's aboard the Voyager spacecraft), we'd suggest including a track or two from local DJs Joseph Mercado, Byron Fenix, and RMC. Though the trio's mixes might not be as highly influential or significant as say Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" or Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 2, both of which were recorded onto Voyager's fabled Golden Disc, the groove-infused compositions of house, eclectic soul, and nu-jazz are a fitting soundtrack for bombing around the final frontier. It's the sort of swanky-yet-spacy symphony you can hear being played every time at the trio's monthly Cosmic session at SoChu House, 2801 North Central Avenue. Mercado, RMC, Fenix — all veterans of the Valley DJ scene — also tend to mix in a few indie dance tracks and downtempo sounds into their mixes at chef Johnny Chu's latest Asian eatery/drinkery and feature monthly guest selectors (such as Raul Riena, who will appear on Friday, November 16). Free mix CDs will be handed out, and bar specials include $5 martinis and well cocktails, as well as $3 beers and Cosmic shots. The out-of-this-world affair starts at 10 p.m. and there's no cover.
