All this took place in less than 24 hours. Once Arreola was released on January 11, she and Andiola appeared at a rally in front of Phoenix's ICE headquarters, surrounded by well-wishers, who earlier had chanted, "Hey, Obama, don't deport my mama."
The story made CNN and illustrated how ordinary people are crushed by ICE. It's a black eye for the agency at a time when Obama seriously is working toward immigration reform.
But it was also a demonstration of raw political muscle — the influence Latinos now have on the Obama administration.
And it is a sign that those who care about human and civil rights must push, on every level, in the coming year to secure basic rights for the undocumented.
This means pressuring ICE to end the hostility of some in its ranks to Obama's policies toward the undocumented, particularly his administration's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which has given DREAMers hope and a reprieve from living like fugitives.
It means pressuring Governor Jan Brewer to rescind her racist executive order denying driver's licenses to DACA beneficiaries, as Andiola and a coalition of activists did during Brewer's state of the state speech on the Arizona Legislature's opening day.
These demonstrators took over the state House lobby in a raucous, yet peaceful, protest that ended with three arrested and a ton of media attention on this ongoing injustice.
Finally, there must be no end to the defiance of what's left of SB 1070, which survives as an embarrassment to this state, one Arizona will never live down until it is stricken from the law books.
To this end, Phoenix civil rights activist Sal Reza and his Barrio Defense Committee will lead a 13-mile march from Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's notorious Fourth Avenue Jail on Saturday, January 19, to Phoenix Police Department headquarters and on to Glendale Police Department HQ.
The purpose is to protest local law enforcement's complicity in the undocumented community's criminalization, which remains unchanged despite the public's fatigue with immigration issues.
So, as they say on the street, "No justice, no peace." Thus begins 2013.
It is apparent to me that Obama rewards those illegal immigrants that break the law in Obama's proposed immigration bill.
USA Citizens rewards those that do NOT break the law in the USA. There is a HUGE difference between Democrats and Republicans.
There is a majority of USA Citizens in the USA, therefore, We are a Nation of USA Citizens and NOT a nation of immigrants. Obama is very confused, even with his education.
@statueoffreedom So... we're not a country of immigrants? So we're all native americans?
IMO? Start deporting the white people back to europe. We'll start with you.
I like to know one thing. Why do all HISPANICS think they have the rite to have PREFERRABLE status THAN ANY ONE FROM OTHER COUNTRYS?? WHY,WHY,WHY.
January 2008 began the "Anti Immigrant Rant", the E-verify Law, the I.C.E. Deportation/Incarceration Programs, the "Foreclosure Crisis", the Great Recession", the Bail Out Programs, and our "New Ballooning National Deficit".
This is No Co-incidence!
The Twenty-Five Year Period prior to January 2008 was "The Most Prosperous Period in Total U.S. History".
We all worked together for America!
"America is great because it is good, when it ceases to be good, it ceases to be great."
Alex De Tocqueville, a very wise 1840's French Historian.
Fact: The Hard Labor Immigrants gladly did for America was the very Foundation of our Strong Economy.
This Great Nation of Immigrants was Built on Far Better Principles, and Values than to rip apart good Christian Families, and to Incarcerate, or Deport Parents away from their Legal Citizen Children!
According to a 2011 census, the population of the Republic of Mexico is 112 million people.
Has anybody ever given any thought as to why roughly 10% of the population of the Republic of Mexico resides illegally in the United States?
What would the effect be on the Republic of Mexico would be if 10% of the population had not left for the US?
Why are economic conditions so bad in the Republic of Mexico that such a high percentage of people, and probably the best workers that the Republic of Mexico has, cannot find economic opportunities in their own country?
Could it be that the Republic of Mexico is a corrupt oligarchy where the nation's wealth is held by a very small minority of the population? Could it be that there is no functional banking or credit system?
Your numbers are very very wrong...
Population of Mexico: 112,336,538
Number of illegals in the US: 11 million
Number of illegals of hispanic descent: 22%
so... with a little math...
2,242,000 illegals of mexican descent live in the US
1.996% of mexico... or... 2% of mexico.
Mexico has about 8 million illegal immigrants... most of them are americans.
@ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul Their banking system functions just fine when they need cash to buyback family members from kidnappers. Cartel watchers have noticed a clearly enforced relationship with the Federal Reserve - indeed some of the biggest banksters have paid penalties to US for laundering their $$$ but of course it is just a wrist slap compared to the amounts involved . . .corrupt oligarchy? Sheesh, you don't have to cross the border to look at that.
Stephen, how come you and the rest of the propagandist media is not talking or writing about the 191 naturalized citizens greeted by Mayor Tibshraeny at morning Naturalization Ceremony today? It must be because they came here LEGALLY.
The only immigration reform will be tighter enforcement and quicker deportations. Every country has immigration laws and the USA is no different. Our laws will never be changed to allow illegal immigration, not now or ever. Activists who think differently are about to be in for a rude awakening. Obama will do nothing to satisfy you. Why should he? You were stupid if you voted for him thinking he will. He fooled every one of you just to get your vote. He cannot be re-elected again so now he can thumb his nose at all of you. Jokes on you.
@JoeArpaioFan Jaffy hates Messcans cuz he has to work with them and they work harder than his lazy white ass at flippin BK burgers
Too many people here with way more time than I have, apparently. I finally HAVE a job, so I need to get my rest. Unfollowing.
I don't hate the Hispanics, but I do have a problem with people breaking the laws that has been made to keep our borders in closed. Do it legal and America will welcome you with open arms, like others have done. Do it illegal and you see what their crying is all about. If the laws are changed then I'll accept that, but probably won't like it if it disses some others who have come here legally.
@Pakrat4ever Well said my friend.
@Pakrat4ever The economic incentives that drive immigration conflict with the laws designed to regulate it. Fighting economic forces in a market economy like the United States is an impossible task. You can't shovel the ocean back with a fork - not even a bulldozer. If the market is creating demand there is an economic benefit when that demand is fulfilled: we are all better off. One must not believe in the free-enterprise/market-economy system to think otherwise.
@bobunf @Pakrat4ever - And we can reign in those “economic forces” that abuse the law to enrich themselves at the expense of the US worker (and, ultimately, of the illegals, too). If you’re implying that we should crack down on employers who hire illegals as an incentive for those illegals to self-deport, I agree.
With the economy the way it is, it surely can't create much incentives to come here, other than wanting to come here because their families have already migrated illegally here. We still have to have immigration laws or all of Mexico will be over here. Our system is already over burdened with problems of legal Americans, and then we have to provide illegals with benefits too. I don't like Free Entry, or Demanded Entry; there is a right way to do things, and our laws are made to make sure it's complied with. These people believe they have a Right to be here, and are Demanding for us to accept them. I say earn your way here legally as so many has. Don't slap these people in the face, because people are to lazy to do it Right.
@bobunf Open your eyes & let your fingers do the walking - in my book it is delusional to follow bogus moral imperative that justifies theft from one poor to give to another poor.
The whole system is Delusional, Bob. But it keeps the blogs going. We couldn't fool you could we? I hope they don't use these Blog comments to determine our mental status for buying a gun or all of us will be determined to be mentally unfit to possess. Lighten up, Bob. We made it though Y2K, the Mayan Calendar, and now we face the End of Time Clock. Have Faith, We'll make it, and if we don't, That's Life, live it to the Fullest.
@sarum @Pakrat4ever @bobunf It baffles me that people like sarum prattle nonsense as in illegals "are not denied our social safety net," but "citizens are."
That is delusional thinking.
@sarum @Pakrat4ever @bobunf - Our government should exert every possible influence to end corruption in their countries of origin and help them establish democratic, free, safe societies with opportunities of their own. The US can’t absorb the downtrodden of the world, much as we might wish we could.
I think Harry Truman had the right idea in 1951
@Pakrat4ever @bobunf People say the illegals are willing to work for less. They can afford to work for less cuz they are not denied our social safety net, which combined with their lower wages makes a decent living. Citizens are denied the social safety net and so cannot afford to work for the low wages. This is documented.
NumbersUSA is a very level-headed, non-racist organization taking a stand for reasonable immigration laws. There DO seem to be a bunch of racist commenters on their blogs—not all—and I hate to be associated with those individuals in any way. But they do not represent the organization, the positions of which seem eminently sensible to me. https://www.numbersusa.com/content/
Sorry; still don’t get it. Why, again, should we support those who undermine our sovereignty and come here in violation of our laws, placing additional burdens on our resources (when Mexico, for example, harshly combats illegal immigration across ITS borders)? What, exactly, is your end game? Simply to allow free transit across our borders for everyone of all nations? Or are we supposed to only allow free access to Mexicans? I have a friend in Haiti who’d like to come to the US. Should he just hire a boat and come ashore? I AM a liberal, but I don’t get this seeming assumption by many (on the left AND, in business, on the right) that we’re just being meanies when we try to enforce our immigration laws.
@johnfmayer The employers that hire them undermines our sovereignty as well as our government undermines our sovereignty. The illegals are merely willing pawns.
Another argument given is that US was settled by the losers, malcontents and undesirables of the nations they came from and their genetic inheritance was defective which is why we have so many sick and unable now. I don't buy that argument although the many sick is true but I view the causal factors as multiple and possible for all new to the nation to become similarly afflicted. Plus, the immigrants coming in are also often the unwanted of their nations as well so if one even believes the bogus argument one can see the solution will only be very shortlived. No, there are other reasons
@johnfmayer "Simply to allow free transit across our borders for everyone of all nations?"
You mean, like when the English, Dutch, etc. came in the 1500s?
There is no such thing as a "good" illegal alien! The sooner American citizens realize that, the better off we will be, the worse off the illegals will be! They all must be deported as soon as possible, in any way that works. I do not believe they have any rights here, and absolutely no right to be here at all! What we have here with this paper, is a pro-illegal alien propaganda sheet that somehow misses the point of what an illegal alien really is, and furthermore, doesn't seem to care!
You do realize it costs $13,000 to deport a single illegal alien right?
So, with 12 million illegal aliens and the cost of deporting 1 costs $13,000, you would spend 156 trillion dollars to deport all the illegal aliens in thecountry.
@MaskedMagician1967 Your math is off, based on what ICE claims it costs to deport it would cost ~$150 BILLION not trillion to deport all illegal aliens. By not deporting them, illegal aliens cost American taxpayers more than $346 billion across 15 federal agencies per year not to mention higher insurance rates for Health, Property & Casualty.
@WHEREISTHETRUTH That unsupported assertion($346 billion) is just wacky on its face. $346 billion divided by 11 million is $31,455 per year for every man, woman and child. And you are not even including anything provided at the state and county level; like schools and law enforcement.
Good Lord. What would a legal immigrant cost? You know, one eligible for food stamps, medicare and medicaid, in-state tuition, housing and utility assistance, disaster relief, social security, unemployment compensation, etc.
A million a year? Two?
You can't seriously suggest that $31,455 is a credible number for people who don't qualify for any of that, and who try to stay in the shadows?
The truth is definitely not with you. Try moving the decimal point to the right and changing the sign.
Then remove the tinfoil, and the bookmark to whatever site provided such absurdity.
@lucymutt47 I think lucy is a troll.
@lucymutt47 Wish we could send white trash like you back to the rancid womb you emerged from and keep every "illegal" in return. What a better country this would be.
@MotherJones @lucymutt47 Mother you are simply stupid and rich enough to remain stupid. Perhaps you are one that believes there really are enough jobs for everybody if only they would try hard enough. You are what is termed "useful idiot," unable to recognize in oneself a lifetime of brainwashing but willing to call names and live in hate based on that brainwashing.
@sarum @MotherJones @lucymutt47 You are what is termed "useless idiot".......You are no one to tell MJ a damned thing about calling people names when you yourself are doing it in your first sentence.....You should really have your doctor adjust med dosage, you ramble like someone who is over-medicating or self-medicating.
@MotherJones @michael-crews @lucymutt47 - One of the strongest voices, a few years ago, against unrestrained immigration legal and illegal, was Barbara Jordan. I’ll save you the trouble of going to Wikipedia: she was black, and she was concerned because illegal immigrants threaten the jobs of black workers most of all.
