Foam If You Want To

If you're in Scottsdale on Friday, March 8, prepare to get foamed. In celebration of Scottsdale Arts Festival and in partnership with Scottsdale Public Art, Maryland-based artist Scott Pennington will set up his "factory" and invite the public to participate.

More About

His work "Pink and Blue Dilemma: The Foam Incident" includes a factory, foam production unit, and several foam workers who jump into action as soon as the factory gets going. Public art employees say that throughout the festival Pennington's factory will ooze pink and blue foam, meant to resemble industrial waste. But Pennington's process is actually very clean. Factory workers attempt to contain the "spill" (made from non-toxic, water-based soap) with brooms, leaf blowers, and sprayers.

Pennington writes that the participatory installation comes from his fascination with labor and the "unending necessity of man to 'work.'" "Pink and Blue Dilemma: The Foam Incident" will be at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.
