Brewer Flips Off 600,000 Military Vets in Arizona by Axing Colonel Joey Strickland

The only thing surprising about how Governor Jan Brewer's flunkies forced Colonel Joey Strickland to resign from his post as director of the Arizona Department of Veterans Services is that people are surprised by it.

We're talking about "GED Jan" here. She's governor only because HighGround Public Affairs' Chuck Coughlin told her to sign Senate Bill 1070, the infamous ethnic-cleansing legislation authored by recalled, disgraced ex-state Senator Russell Pearce.

The results: a tsunami of hate we're still recovering from and Jan's landslide 2010 election.

Colonel Joey Strickland, forced to resign for no apparent good reason by Brewer's chief of staff, Scott Smith.
Colonel Joey Strickland, forced to resign for no apparent good reason by Brewer's chief of staff, Scott Smith.

A class act she's not. Never has been, from back in her days in the state Senate, when she benefited from legislative immunity after an alleged DUI, to her claims of "beheadings" in the Arizona desert to her denying driving privileges to young DREAMers eligible for President Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program to shaking her finger in the president's face.

Her recent pitch for expanding Medicaid to 400,000 Arizonans? That, friends, has zero to do with "compassion" or her being a "pro-life governor," as she claimed when she announced the proposal in March, surrounded by healthcare professionals.

Rather, it has more to do with Coughlin's lobbying on behalf of the healthcare industry, and that Coughlin is smart enough to know that if Republicans refuse to expand access to AHCCCS (Arizona's Health Care Cost Containment System), they'll be handing the Democrats a cudgel to beat them with in 2014.

After all, Brewer and the Republicans cut the Medicaid rolls by 110,000 people in 2011. So, between 2011 and 2013 Brewer grew a conscience?

I think not. Nor a brain, apparently, as is evidenced by this blunder over Strickland's resignation, demanded of Strickland by Brewer's chief of staff, Scott Smith.

The way I heard it, Smith was ticked that Strickland had hired Tucson teabagger Terri Proud for a low-level, $40,000-a-year job at the ADVS.

Last year, the governor's staff had advised Strickland not to hire Proud when she was in the Legislature, but Strickland believed that had to do with Proud still serving in the state House.

Sure, Proud is no great catch. I mean, at the top of her LinkedIn profile, under "education," she lists "Tucson bartending."

She has a record of saying stupid stuff — like the time she wrote to a constituent saying women who want an abortion should be forced to watch a video of the procedure before they can get one.

Whether it was spouting misinformation regarding Arizona's Independent Redistricting Commission or misquoting Susan B. Anthony on abortion, Proud had a particularly bad case of heel-in-mouth disease, a condition she confirmed as untreatable during a recent interview with the University of Arizona's student news service, which asked her about women in combat.

"Women have certain things during the month [that] I'm not sure they should be out there dealing with," she told a reporter. "I don't know how to address that topic in a very diplomatic manner."

In the piece, Proud was identified as just having been hired by the ADVS as an administrative assistant. The article made the Governor's Office go ballistic.

According to Brewer's office, Strickland, a combat veteran who did two tours in Vietnam, violated a direct order not to hire Proud. Strickland has countered that he recalled the order from last year but did not know this order was an indefinite prohibition on Proud.

Thing is, Proud hadn't even started her new position. A job offer easily could have been rescinded.

Instead, all this resulted in Strickland's turning in his resignation on Smith's order.

What exactly was the objection to Proud?

"I'm not going to get into the details of that," Brewer's flack, Matt Benson, told me. "But any doubts we had were validated by her highly questionable public remarks . . . regarding women in the military."

Now that's funny. After all, if there were a ban on state employees making inane comments, Brewer no longer would have a job.

On the surface, it sounds as if Brewer's little bitch, Smith, had a hissy fit and ended up ousting a respected public servant who's done more for this state than Smith has in his career as a professional sycophant.

Strickland told me that Smith flipped out on him over the Proud kerfuffle, dropping F-bombs all over the place, calling Strickland and his staffers "fucking ignoramuses," among other epithets.

"I was so startled, I asked him if he wanted me to resign," Strickland related. "He said, 'Fucking yes!'"

Needless to say, Smith never served in the military. The guy's been a desk jockey all his life.

Perhaps there were second thoughts on Smith's, or on someone's, part, as there was a follow-up meeting in Strickland's office with Smith and others where the Proud matter was discussed. After it, Strickland was told to go ahead with his letter of resignation.

The backlash to this incident has been intense, with leaders of veterans' groups and others calling on Brewer to reverse Smith's action.

Many vets admire Strickland for reforming a department riddled with incompetence when he was appointed by Governor Janet Napolitano in 2008, after she wooed him from a similar position in Louisiana state government.

Brewer kept Strickland on, and Strickland scored nearly $20 million from the feds and another $10 million from the Legislature to open a new veterans' home in Tucson. Facilities were planned for Yuma and elsewhere.

My husband is a disabled vet.  ADVS is in charge of his finances due to he was unable to manage them at the time he was hospitalized and stole everything from him.  They went to court withour telling him and reversed his divorce from his first wife and has spent over 100k in his money over the last 4 years trying to re-do the divorce.  The first time he met the attorney they hired was Jan 2012, they hired the attorney in 2009!!!!!They got a ruling for child support modification on June 27, 2011 and as of today are still sending his ex the original amount which should have been reduced by at least $1002.00 a mointh.  They look good on paper but ask the people who have to deal with them and you will see there is alot of problems with the agency and it all stems from Joey Strickland.  Your paper has done stories on thier mismangement of veterans estates before, now you paise him!

Where was Jan Brewer (Commander in Chief) when one of her field grade officers, Paul Babeu was soliciting men for sexual gratification while he was an active member of the Arizona National Guard? (I will suck your dick as much as needed). Why did she not step up and order him to resign immediately. She had the legal and moral authority.

Where was Jan Brewer, when handsome Tom Horne was caught eating pita with one of his subordinates? She too should have gone public, and demanded Tom Horne resign immediately.

Jan Brewer should be ashamed of herself.

By the way, Terri has changed her LinkedIn profile.  She now lists Pima Community College and something called "Tasis Hellenic" under "Education."

All this negative talk about Jan Brewer makes me wish she could get re-elected. You people sound like children, insulting her over her intelligence. All you know about Jan Brewer is what people like Stephen Lemons write about her, that she's a retard with no brain activity and an evil intent to inflict pain on minorities and everyone not part of the conservative establishment. It reminds me of when Bush was in office and every liberal painted him as a fool who miraculously stumbled into the white house. Things don't happen that way, it takes brains, power and ambition to assume an elected position, and Jan is no different. She gets treated like a down-syndrome baby who eats crayons in her spare time yet she somehow has become governor of Arizona and even retained her seat in a follow-up election. That's something your average idiot would be incapable of doing

I am an American fighting man. I serve in the forces which guard my country and our way of life. I am prepared to give my life in their defense.

Scott "I'm a mall walker" Smith never took this oath!

This whole situation was ignited by the non Veteran, "I never served anyone but myself", bureaucratic staffer, and "F" bomb shouting Scott Smith, who cares more about his twisted ego than he does about the heroes who sacrifice and serve this great nation and their state. Living proof that Smith is always more than willing to prance off to the mall than march to war like a man.

Stephen, Stephen, Stephen.  Wrong again.  Wrong, Wrong, Wrong!  You write, "Similarly, Jan "We Have Did" Brewer is an idiot, and she knows she's an idiot."

I haven't seen any evidence at all to demonstrate that she has any clue as to how big an idiot she is.

Given the state of affairs at the Arizona Department of Veterans Affairs, a major shakeup is justified.  Over the last 15 years I have seen one of the premier Veterans Advocacy organizations in the Country degrade to a retirement home for AZNG full time hacks.

Their counselors are poorly trained and more interested in getting plumb assignments than assisting the Veterans.  In one case a counselor refused to meet with Veterans and review their cases, routinely missed deadlines and cancelled long term cases to show progress and pad their statistics.

A Veteran whom I know had a claim through the AZDVA which had been under review for 12 years.  The Advocate cancelled his claim without permission.  He had to refile, with another servicing agency.  That Organization filed his claim which was approved a year later.  The AZDVA's actions cost the Veteran almost $300,000.00 in benefits which were due him.

Good ridance.

GIN JAN BREWSKY  is just an USEFUL IDIOT, see, I think that Her minions are the ones that little by litttle -so not to draw any attention- probably had advised Her to put certain people on key places. all this being done in order to "pave" the way and try to fly the DRUNKARD under the radar for a THIRD TERM as GUV, thus these minions secure their job to keep on sucking on the public tit.

We live in Southern California now, after 51 years in Arizona. This lady is the source of as many jokes here as Arizona. I may have to change my name, as her son is named Michael and is a sex offender. Real family values in her constellation of influence. She just proves that elections are now auctions. Look out Arizona, she is arranging for 3rd party management of the State. If only she knew what that meant!  When the rent comes due on the sale leasebacks the Veterans of Arizona will then know where their sovereignty went in the night. Joey Strickland is a man of ultimate integrity. So Cal is wathching. MPB/USMC

having been a disabled veteran for 39 years it's not surprising to see behavior from those who never served in uniform advise our governor (also no military service) on veteran's issues. having seen firsthand the improved quality of services provided by the ADVS one can oan only say the wrong person resigned. brewer and her staff should be those resigning.

@eric.nelson745 @bgray59 Did not answer our question concerning the $300,000 figure.  Had the Vets case not been cancelled, based on his final rating of 100% he would have been awarded back pay for 12 years based on Veteran with spouse and one child.  Currently that rate is $3,000 per month.  Over the 12 years it would have averaged a little over $2,500 per month.

bgray59

@eric.nelson745 @bgray59 I work with Veterans on a daily basis assisting them and keeping them motivated to file claims for deserved benefits.  I have personal knowledge of what happens.

My brother n laws PTSD Claim took 15 years to be resolved.

I have verified the documentation of the individual who's claim was cancelled by the AZDVA councilor.

My own claim had to be restarted because the Councilor failed to file the paperwork in a timely fashion.  She had my portion in her hand for 2 months prior to the deadline and refused to meet with me to review it.  The only reason my claim was not denied for timeliness was because I filed a complaint with the Governor's office.

cybercy_2000

@eric.nelson745 @bgray59 Try filing for VA Disability.  You will receive a package that's almost 3 inches thick to fill out and they tell you in the documentation that it will be at least 6 months before they will even look at it.  There is a 13 month backlog.  This is all done by paper.  They do not use a computerized system.  Known Vets who had to wait longer than that.  Also, try going to the VA with an emergency, you will be there all day.  They call it Veteran's Affairs because it is an all day affair.

@JoeArpaioFan Jaffy, you're not a veteran. Why, I don't know. Maybe you have flat feet, or you told them you're gay before DADT went away. @eric.nelson745 @bgray59 It was the one in Show Low she left a couple of years ago.  I have not had any dealings with the one who is currently assigned.  There are a couple of counselors who have been very helpful.  One was in the Phoenix Office (he is no longer with the Department and the other in Prescott.  The rest of them aren't worth the urine expended to put out a fire if they were burning.

cybercy_2000
cybercy_2000

@eric.nelson745 @cybercy_2000 @bgray59 There's one other thing causing the backlog -- I am a vet and due to circumstances I have had to stay in veteran housing and while I am grateful there is housing available to homeless vets, there are a lot of vets in these housing who are more than able to work (they work while they are there), some of them (not all) would rather sit around there and file for disability and/or non-service related pension.  These few who don't really qualify for disability would rather have the VA take of them instead of taking personal responsibility which also adds to the backlog.  I know what I'm talking about.  I've lived with the people on a daily basis and that's all they talk about.

eric.nelson745

@cybercy_2000 @eric.nelson745 @bgray59 Back when I filed for a service-connected disability, VA was pretty much on the ball. But then I had an AMVETS advocate. I got rated at 20%, which I must say is better than nuthin'. They pull $255/mo. out of my retired pay and give it back to me tax-free. That's $3,060/yr. Again, better than nuthin'. With all the red tape and everything today, I might not even bother. VA's performance now is about like it was when Nixon was in power, by that I mean the service you got from them was shittier than shit.
