Property Values

Though programs like HGTV's House Hunters and Love it or List it make home buying seem like a breezy whirl of fun and options, anyone who's gone through the process knows that it's way more stressful than that. And anyone familiar with Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun knows that the playwright's family had it way worse when it came to real estate purchases than any clueless couple on the cable network could ever imagine.

Hansberry's play details the racism her black family experienced when purchasing a home in 1937 an all-white Chicago neighborhood. Bruce Norris' Clybourne Park fictionalizes events leading up to and following Hansberry's story. White couple Bev and Russ own the home, which they decide to sell to a black family. Some 50 years later, the neighborhood is a now-gentrifying all-black enclave and the house hits the market again.
