Adding a new art gallery to the local scene is always a good thing, and R. Pela Contemporary Art celebrates in high style as owner (and New Times contributor) Robrt L. Pela welcomes visitors with an inaugural exhibition of new works from Hank Fries and Jake Fischer. Fries' three-dimensional metal sculptures appear, at times, otherworldly, depicting humanoids as part machine, conceptually tied to technology. His work gains inspiration from science fiction/fantasy artist Joe Johnston and futuristic automotive designer Mark Stehrenberger. Fischer, an ASU art instructor, creates oil paintings on plywood in life-like depictions of Phoenix night scenes. “The negative, beveled edge of each painting allows the viewer to actually occupy the space, rather than experiencing the image as an outsider,” Fischer says.
