One of the "dirty hippies," it turned out, was former Arizona Senator Gutierrez, also a past gubernatorial candidate, who was among those carried away by police in the early hours of October 16 for overstaying their welcome at a city park.

Boghosian says such action often "placates the public into thinking law enforcement is dealing with national-security threats." The reality, she says, is that the PPD was investigating "domestic activism" when it should have been "pursuing real criminal activity."

The local ACLU defended those arrested, and in nearly all cases, got the charges against them dismissed.

"At best, it's a bad use of police resources," ACLU lawyer Pachoda says, "because there was no indication that people were planning crimes, committing crimes, or meeting for any other purpose than [constitutionally protected] political protest."

Sooner or later people are going to fully realize the only domestic terrorists are the police and will start treating them as the enemy they are to freedom.

I actually attended a pre 10/15 planning meeting. Based on the anti-police, pro violence statements being made by the anarchists there ("fuck your peaceful protests", "fuck the police", "no peace police") and the general refusal to guarantee a peaceful protest by those same anarchists, the police had ample reason to keep track of them as well as act as they did.  I am a veteran of  many anti-war protests and being at their "organizing" meeting frightened the hell out of me, in a way that I have never been of any other group of this nature.

Based on the attitudes and intent of what I observed, the police were and are fully justified in talking whatever actions they felt necessary.  I have never been as concerned about any protest, and the safety of those who were going in unaware of what this group's true intent was, as I was about this group. The police and other law enforcement agencies using their anti-terrorist network as they did was fully appropriate.  I have never been as close to a group I could consider terrorists and who desired violence as I was when I attended that meeting.

I support and salute the police for everything they did in regards to the occupy protests/riots.  They did an amazing and very professional job.

The New Times, a publication I have been reading for about 31, years really let their readers down by publishing this one sided and misleading article.

Oh you sheople, how you struggle to understand, I know its so hard to understand, but that is by design not because it so difficult to understand.  NO its all too simple, but the truth is so heart breaking you as sheople can't take it so you ignore the obvious.  Even if you think you know, you still don't know what you don't know.  This my sheople is the problem, there used to be no place to go to learn this but then 20 years ago the Internet came along and you have had as much time as most ancient civilizations take to get the whole world behind them.  But no, you sheople can't comprehend what has happened to you because you fail to look into the mirror and see what you have become.  Poor Sheople.. Some day you too can ask the Wizard for a Brain and he just might give it to you, if you can answer this one question.. Am I a Sheople or a real people, not a person or a number.. or many numbers,.  Or am I a real sheople.  Some day, you may come to understand that you are a People and not a Sheople and when that day comes you my Sheople will be free.  But because the rules say they only have to write these codes into law and not tell you where it is then I suggest you "Go Private", get "Secure", don't be a public Sheople, Be a Private People.  When you figure this riddle out, you will be free.  I won't stop you from trying to learn from the droves of people who died for you to be able to read this, and if you still are doing so, I congratulate you for passing the 8th grade.. Some day you too will die and your legacy as a Sheople may or may not be able to enjoy one of Triumph of personal "Private" Freedom over "Public" Slavery.  And you will die having your public self die with you. 100% USDA Choice Dumbass.  The Sheople that follow will know just where to go to recycle all your waste, your now so called backyard. Enjoy it while you can, the weight of your ignorance is about ready to come crashing down around your ears.  Look behind you your ass is catching up to you, run!

The Cops do NOT have our backs people - that's the problem.  They are sworn to protect and serve ALL the rights of the PEOPLE, not just the power brokers and elites of our community.  This is a clear example of them violating that public trust. What a relief it was to see hecklers at President Obama's speechs not get immediately hauled off to jail but to be celebrated.  After the rough treatment people got during the Bush administration for exercising their right to free speech, that was a welcome change.  Let's get to work on the community / police liason communities the Mayor Stanton has set up

The police routinely use and abuse the resources of the Arizona Counter Terrorism Information Center, its Terrorism Liaison officers, and an Intelligence Analysts. My 4th, 5th, 6th and 14th amendment rights were violated by the Arizona Department of Public Safety (the overseers of ATIC) and Glendale Police Department. Not one person, court or agency would do anything to stop it from happening again or protect citizens’ rights… Watch the changes I am bringing to politics! Geoffrey Jacobs

Peggy captured a good example of the bullshit the cops were doing in this video.  Shwiekert couldn't even last through a 5 minute video without getting caught in a lie or two. The Police are not our friends. They never will be.  They have a job to do and that is to protect the ruling class and at all costs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&feature=endscreen&v=s7q3mKPiAWo

As one of those "evil", non-violent protesters arrested that night/early morning at Hance Park in 2011 for constitutionally suffering our first amendment right to re-dress grievances with our government non-violently, I want to thank you Mrs. Alonzo for this excellent article that you have written.

This is why Mrs. Alonzo and other investivgative journalists like Mr. Lemons are still helping to keep the Fourth Estate alive in the face of growing anti-democratic corporate corruption of our country !

R.I.P. Mr. Hastings...you now join my pantheon of heroes with other journalists like Don Bolles who were murdered in Arizona for seeking righteous truth ! Thank you Phoenix New Times for not selling out to the corporate machine and employing such excellent investigative journalists as those mentioned above.

When is Chief Garcia going to realize that trolls like Assistant Chief Tracey Montgomery and Executive Assistant Chief Joseph A. Yahner drag him down and repeatedly make him look stupid?  Garcia finally got rid of "dead weight" (no pun intended) Assistant Chief James A. Pina through attrition.  Big talker Garcia said he would hold his Ececutive Staff accoutable when he interviewed for his position.  Looks like he lied!

Again, when we were working in the group to stop the Reagan Administration's illegal support of terrorists in South America (Nicarauguan Contras) and selling weapons to Iran (terrorists) and importing cocaine into this country to start the crack epidemic, we had an DEA/ATF agent sent to spy on us (Committee in Support of the People of El Salvador CISPES).  A few years later I saw a picture of this guy who was really friendly with us who was asleep on a park bench (Patriot's Park of all places) and he had an DEA badge on.  These people are disgusting pieces of human trash which hold the balls of the wealthy in this world while they fugk the rest of us.  How much do they get paid I wonder?  How much does it take to clear a polluted conscience like that?

This is NOTHING, when we were organizing the anti Palo Verde legal  at Renz Jennings home (head of the Arizona Corporation Commission for a time), we picked up the phone and heard Salt River Project and Arizona Public Service personnel joking about our efforts - they didn't realize they had left their line open and were really surprised when we informed them they needed to stop eavesdropping - THIS WAS IN THE EARLY 1980s.  So, folks, this has been going on for a long time.  Lot's of people in the "establishment" know it goes on and some activists are even assigned lifetime "monitors" to keep tabs on them.  The wealthy of this world are in charge - our little democracy game simply amuses them.  Follow the Money!

Being centrally located in the photo array titled:  "Persons of Interest to the ALEC Conference", I have a few critiques about the PPD and the junk intelligence the Fusion center put together myself - like how many of my friends on that page had NOTHING to do with the ALEC resistance, yet were implicated as haing "committed assault on police officers" on this face sheet handed out to all sorts of private and public law enforcement agents. It tells you just how incompetent that whole homeland security crew is here, too - they had half their intelligence wrong. That's how innocent people end up on "NO FLY" and terrorist watch lists.  Maybe if they had been watching neo-nazi JT Ready instead, they could have seen the massacre of his family coming. This is all to say that the MESA Fusion Center and the PHX PD Homeland Security office are a BIG WASTE of money, and probably do far more harm than good. (PS - I was NOT among those yelling "We love you" to the line of riot cops as they closed in to arrest everyone. I had other words for them. Still do..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qejxW6iakI8)

The important point here is that the police were actively trying to crush and hamper organizing.

Point two, thanks for writing this but you really need to interview some people that were actually impacted by this.

@ThankyouPhxPD there is nothing violent about saying 'fuck the police' etc ... nothing ... violence, according to law, must include a victim of physical assault or threat of physical assault ... violence is what police have been delivering to unarmed people for decades ... at our own expense

@yourproductsucks Yeah, because clearly anyone who questions how your beloved, almighty government conducts itself MUST be some patchouli-wearing dropout, right?  Because all the good sheep like you are clean cut and smell like a combination of soap and blind compliance, right?

@FRONTERAWhy we are failing is because those that are paying attention, such as yourself, are quoting those who cannot help us.  This is a new day.  Today, the duty of the patriot should be to protect his government from corporations.  Because the country itself is a corporation, it is vital to end the corporate takeover.

NoMas

@ExpertShot Although I don't disagree with your overall stance, I do disagree that law enforcement is sworn to protect and serve all the rights of the people.  If you notice the police agencies removed the "Protect and Serve/ Serve and Protect" slogans from their vehicles long ago because that is not their purpose.  The slogan was meaningless words to fool the masses just as western civilization has utilized now for thousands of years.

Y2K marked the United States transition from the Military Industrial Complex that Eisenhower spoke of in 1961, to a Military Security Complex.  Security for who?  Security for the corporations.  Security for the globalists.  Security to make sure that each and every commenter on this post and in this nation falls in line and never make any serious attempt to alter the power structure of the incorporated nation, its incorporated states, counties, or cities.

ConcernedCitizen

@prisonabolitionist  The media didn't cover the event during the day when all the people who attended were from every social economic class, all ages, babies in strollers listening to speakers, buying books and art. A great event for the community to come together. To read about what was going on behind the scenes and who was targeted is disturbing and chilling. The SWAT teams, paramilitary show of force was over-kill and a waste of taxpayers dollars. And Phoenix wants people to come to the shops and restaurants and spend money? Getting $56.00 parking tickets on the week-end when NO ONE is Downtown is certainly an unwelcome gesture.

Phoenix, you can't have it both ways. Do you want the people downtown to justify the taxpayers dollars so you can show off your anti-terrorism paramilitary operation or do you want the people to enjoy their city? Or maybe, you want the city for yourselves and the Federal dollars pouring in and scare the people away. You decide.

@exiledarizona I second your Point Two.  The comparison of the IRS "scandal", the AP leak sweep scandal, and the overreach of the PPD by trampling on the 4th Amendment is ridiculous.  Basically, she's just reporting on another investigative reporter's in-depth investigation??  Better to just put up the link & point the way to the PR Watch or DBA Press sites so readers can read Mr. Hodai's articles first hand.

I will faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all the duties of police officer of the (insert name) police department to the best of my ability. So help me God."

The oath to support the Constitution is, in fact, an oath to protect and serve the RIGHTS of the PEOPLE.  The Constitution is in place to protect our rights from Government overreach and thus, their oath is to do the same.  Whether they remove a slogan from a vehicle or not, that is their oath, which they are sworn to.

I agree with you about the corporate power granted by the states.  However, that power is the limitation of liability of the investment of the owners of stock of the corporation.  THAT is the nexus of power.

@saltywench @exiledarizona Yeah, I am a bit lost on this as well.  From my perspective, anything that strays from the political narrative that Lemons writes about is passed onto less experienced reporters it seems.  If it is passed on at all.

Might as well of just let me write the story or the folks at Down and Drought or anyone that has any experience writing about this stuff.  It would have worked out better, and in fact this is what Vice has been doing and to some extent Gawker.
