While we don't particularly dig when folks chop up books and make them into "art," we do enjoy the craftsmanship of Julie Chen. She doesn't bother with the chopping, instead creating books that are readable tomes that double as works of art. Chen produces limited editions of books (usually in runs of 150 or less) with non-traditional structure, featuring elements like accordion folds, envelopes, and other three-dimensional components.
Take a look at her pieces on view in "The Art of The Book" at Burton Barr Central Library, 1221 North Central Avenue. There's no charge to see the exhibit, which is on display both on the library's first floor in the new books section and on the fourth floor through Friday, September 20. Hours Friday, August 16, are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. See www.phoenixpubliclibrary.org or call 602-262-4636 for more information.
