A good pupil will know he's achieved success when he's finally able to challenge -- and take down -- his master. For years sous chef Garrison Whiting has trained under executive chef Lester Gonzalez, and soon he'll see his chance to demonstrate the extent of his culinary skill.
On Thursday August 22, Scottsdale's Cowboy Ciao restaurant is hosting an in-house sommelier and chef throwdown between its resident culinary and wine experts, offering the students a chance to prove themselves against their teachers. Whiting and Gonzalez will c-create five new courses to present while General Manager and Beverage Manager Rich Funari and owner Peter Kasperski will go tête-à-tête in a bottle battle: Each will select five wines to pair with the meal. After the five-course, 10-wine experience diners will help settle the score between the students and their teachers.
