Hit or Mistress

Modern horror movies, between gratuitous gore and vanishing boundaries, don’t have room for the campiness that made B-movies fun. Recapture the magic with the 25th anniversary screening of Elvira, Mistress of the Dark Saturday, September 28.

While Cassandra Peterson’s gothed up cleavage might have caught eyes first, it was her tongue-in-cheek sass that landed the role of her lifetime as a horror host in early 80s Los Angeles. The 1988 flick’s barely-there plot involves Elvira ditching the tv life to pursue Vegas stardom when a great aunt’s passing grants her an inheritance of a spooky New England mansion. The box office bomb isn’t high art but the ridiculous dialogue and bad acting is horror that’s actually fun to watch.
