Elfed-Up Kicks

Some of Great Arizona Puppet Theater’s oldest puppets, handmade by its founders in 1976, star in The Elves and the Shoemaker, continuing through Sunday, December 22. Perfect for kindergarteners on up and including original music, it’s one of our favorite fairy tales, too, because nothing too scary happens -- just mysterious acts of kindness.

GAPT performs in a gorgeous historic downtown building whose gift shop features not just puppets and books galore for families to imagine with together, but also finger-puppet/fridge-magnet versions of role models from history, science, and the humanities -- such as Zora Neale Hurston, Oscar Wilde, and Marie Curie -- that make neat stocking-stuffers for older students and geeky grownups. Showtime Friday, December 13, is 10 a.m. at 302 West Latham Street. Admission starts at $7 (and it’s free for a child younger than 2 who attends with an older child). Call 602-262-2050 for reservations; learn more at www.azpuppets.org.

Wednesdays-Saturdays, 10 a.m.; Saturdays, Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: Dec. 4. Continues through Dec. 22, 2013
