Touchy Feely

Typically museum exhibitions stimulate just one sense. Touching art is verboten. There's not much to smell. Sound effects, save delicate instrumental music, are uncommon and usually unrelated. And eating the works (let alone a snack from home) would qualify as beyond frowned upon.

Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art currently offers a show that rejects those norms. With just five works of art, “The Five Senses” blends simplicity and daring to conjure one of this season's must-see exhibitions. Olafur Eliason's Beauty combines light and water and mixes with Janet Cardiff's aural installation, The Forty Part Motet, while visitors can grab and eat the oranges that stack to make Roelof Louw's Soul City (Pyramid of Oranges). Snack away. Should the juice spurt onto your shirt, you, then, are art, too.
