10 Nerdy Things to Do in Metro Phoenix This May
Every month, there's plenty for geeks to celebrate in Phoenix, but that's more the case this May than ever. With Star Wars Day on May 4, Captain America: Civil War on May 6, and Free Comic Book Day on May 7, we may as well call this month Nerd Christmas. And in lieu of a fat man in a red suit, we have one coming in a hockey jersey to discuss the Dark Knight. Here's hoping you've been good.
So here's something different. See Steven Spielberg's classic dinosaur flick Jurassic Park performed right here ... entirely with puppets. All Puppet Players have reinterpreted the film with a budget of "tens of dollars," and they're delivering the world premiere right here in Phoenix. See it at Playhouse on the Park through May 7. Tickets range from $22 to $54. To find out more, visit the Phoenix Theatre website.
Star Wars: The Music by the Phoenix Symphony
If you want to celebrate Star Wars Day with class, look no further than this Phoenix Symphony performance. On Wednesday, May 4, at 7:30 p.m., see them bring John Williams' legendary score to life, including classics from the original trilogy alongside new tunes from The Force Awakens. Star Wars costumes are encouraged. The event will take place at the Mesa Arts Center, and tickets range from $31 to $77. Find out more and purchase tickets at the Mesa Arts Center website.
Cobra Arcade Bar will be celebrating Star Wars Day in style.
May the 4th Be With You at Cobra Arcade Bar
A nerd can always find a good time at Cobra Arcade Bar, one of our favorite best game bars in the Valley. But on Wednesday, May 4, the bar will amplify its nerd appeal by throwing a Star Wars Day celebration. Festivities include a Star Wars cosplay contest, all-night drink specials, prizes, and giveaways, and apparently a set by "DJ Darth Vader." Roll up to the bar at 9 p.m. to get your force on.
All About Books and Comics will celebrate Free Comic Book Day, as will several other Phoenix shops.
Free Comic Book Day
On Saturday, May 7, you'll be able to grab a stack of free issues at most comic shops in the Valley, but if you want to really make the most out of Free Comic Book Day, you'll need to hit up more than one locale. All About Books and Comics in Phoenix will host free photo ops with superheroes, a fundraiser for Hospice of the Valley, a huge sidewalk sale, and more. Drawn To Comics in Glendale will deliver local comic creators as well as two Power Rangers actors, with a sale of 25 percent off all comic books. And Samurai Comics in Mesa will present the Fifth Annual Arizona Comic Mini Expo, featuring artists and writers from DC and Image. To find the full list of participating stores, visit the Free Comic Book Day website.
Live Podcast: Fatman on Batman with Kevin Smith
You know Kevin Smith as the director of films like Clerks, Chasing Amy, Dogma, and Tusk, but these days, he spends more time recording his various and hilarious podcasts. Be a part of one of them at this live recording of Fatman on Batman, his weekly show on the film industry, geek culture, and all things related to the Caped Crusader. Smith will host the show on Saturday, May 7, at Stand Up Live, and general admission is $37 per person. This event is 21-and-over only. Find out more and purchase tickets on Stand Up Live's website. You can also see Smith record Jay & Silent Bob Get Old with Jason Mewes on Friday, May 6, and if you're under 21, you can still go to An Evening With Kevin Smith later that night.
