20. Jules Demetrius
When we last put the spotlight on 100 creative forces in Phoenix, it was no secret there were more than 100 individuals who were making waves in the local arts community. So as we count down to our annual Best of Phoenix issue, we're profiling 100 more. Welcome (back) to 100 Creatives.
Jules Demetrius is a local painter who describes himself as a "skinny nerd, sushi freak, and friend to most woodland creatures great and small."
Demetrius has lived in Phoenix for more than 12 years and has shown his work at The Icehouse, 5&6, Blunt Club, Wet Paint, and he'll showcase his latest this weekend during Lambchop at the Monarch Theatre.
I came to Phoenix with ... two suitcases, a recently divorced lesbian, and an over-active frontal lobe -- all of which are still in my life to some degree

I make art because ... I have to. It's natural to me, like blinking or daily toenail growth. Fish swim. Flies fly. Arpaio profiles. I make stuff.
I'm most productive when ... my studio is clean, the kids are happy, my subwoofer is coughing, and I have stacks of fresh wood, new cans, blades, and some sour diesel
My inspiration wall consists of ... my memories. I'm not much on clutter. I keeps my shit nice.
I've learned the most from ... observation. Paying attention to cats that are higher up on the artistic food chain. I could drop a few names but they get enough pub. My turn please.
Good work should always ... make you feel something. As long as it pushes a button within you then the artist has done his job.
The Phoenix creative scene could use more ... patrons of the arts. More free walls. More art stores. Less cops. And several murals by that art kid.
The Creatives, so far ... (And while you're here, check out 100 Tastemakers on Chow Bella.)
