Speak Thunder Films
You don't need a major income to stay in touch with happenings around town. From free documentary screenings to graphic novel get-downs and community get-togethers, the Valley offers its fair share of activities -- on the house. Here are are top three picks for free events in metro Phoenix this week.
On Thursday, August 7, filmmakers Merete Mueller and Christopher Smith will host a free screening of Tiny, a documentary that follows one couple's journey to build and live in a 120-square-foot house. Tiny will screen at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30) at Harkins Valley Art Theater and conclude with a film discussion led by the creators. For details, visit schoolofsustainability.asu.edu.
Throughout the month of August, the city of Phoenix is breaking up the midweek monotony by hosting Wednesday Wind Ups at Civic Space Park. Starting at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 6, the downtown community can enjoy food truck-catered lunches, free corn hole, zumba, yoga, and discussions about health and fitness. With Sin City: A Dame To Kill For coming to theaters, Friday, August 22, fans of the cult classic series have reason to celebrate. That's why Obscura is headed to Rips Ales and Cocktail on Saturday, August 9, for a special Sin City dance party. The party begins at 8:30 p.m. Admission is free before 9 p.m. and $5 after. Guests are encouraged to wear black attire with red trim and pose in the black, white, and red photo booth hosted by Jeremiah Toller. Beats will be spun by Las Vegas DJ Allen, and prizes for upcoming concerts will be given away. Visit the event on Facebook for details.
