4: Frank Gonzales
When we last put the spotlight on 100 creative forces in Phoenix, it was no secret there were more than 100 individuals who were making waves in the local arts community. So in celebration of our Best of Phoenix issue, we're profiling 100 more. Welcome (back) to 100 Creatives.
Frank Gonzales was born in Mesa in 1975 and raised in Tempe. He says he was interested in art after high school but didn't really know how to pursue it or if there was a future in it.
"It seemed so far fetched at the time and all I really wanted to do was Graffiti, that was my most creative outlet," he says. "I took art classes at PHX community college for a year and transferred to MCC after hearing about their great art dept. It was there where I was introduced to drawing and painting in a classical manner."
Gonzales moved to California to attend the Laguna College of Art and Design, then to New York, and then back to Phoenix last December. He currently lives in Tempe and paints fulltime.
I came BACK to Phoenix with ... the intentions to make a living through painting and not have a 9 to 5.
I make art because ... I'm not good an much else.
I'm most productive when ... I'm locked in my studio.
My inspiration wall is full of ... some studies I made and friends art work. Also some tchotchkes I've found and taped to the wall.
I've learned the most from ... leaving home and living elsewhere.
Good work should always ... be honest.
The Phoenix creative scene could use more ... I think I need to spend some more time in the scene to make a Judgement. Although, I can say that we need something here in Tempe!
The Creatives, so far ... (And while you're here, check out 100 Tastemakers on Chow Bella.)
