Rachel Bess was born in the Ozarks and raised in Phoenix. She has a degree in painting from ASU.
In her words: "My most recent work is about the continuum of relationships between humans and nature - from a harmonic and mutually beneficial relationship to an adversarial one where we try to shape, dominate and control our natural surroundings. The paintings aren't meant to be literal depictions of this balance (or imbalance) but rather to symbolize and evoke the mood of that amity, discord, control and beauty."
That's a mouthful. All you really need to know is that her work is gorgeous. Check it out after the jump.

What's your last big project?
A solo show for Copro Gallery in Santa Monica called 'Between Dusk and Dawn'.
What's your next big project?
Working on a show at Perihelion [on Roosevelt Street in Phoenix] with Liz McGrath for mid-201.
How much do you hate being asked what your next big project is?
I plan far in advance because the paintings take so long, so generally I don't hate it. Though usually I don't have a theme ready until I'm half done with the show and can find a connecting thread. This time I know where I'm going from the get-go, so it is oddly satisfying to be asked about the next big project. Figures, ghosts, Perihelion, 2011. :)
What's something you want Phoenix to know about you?
I raise most of our produce, all of our eggs and some of our meat (when we eat it) in our back and front yard. I wish I had dairy goats and a tilapia pond... No room for the goats, but the fish could happen.
