Tempe's Mill Avenue and Scottsdale's Marshall Way have already strung and flipped the switches of their annual holiday bubble lights, but the two cities' public art programs have a different kind of street-side activation in mind.

The second cycle of IN FLUX -- a program that commissions, promotes and enables the installation of temporary art in and among vacant and active storefronts -- is in full gear.

IN FLUX began as a pilot program, managed by the Scottsdale Cultural Council, in 2010. This year, in addition to temporarily activating a handful of vacant storefronts in downtown Scottsdale and Tempe, the program includes a residency space for one local artist, an installation in the Scottsdale Civic Center Library, and a project that will be created around the canalspace in downtown Scottsdale for spring equinox of 2012.

Now all you have to do is apply.

Applications should include five digital images of previously completed artwork (specific proposals are not requested at this stage) with artist, title, media, dimensions, and date information, a resume, and a statement for which project you'd like to be considered.

The deadline for all project opportunities is December 20, and project managers Kirstin Van Cleef and Maja Aurora are available for consultations during IN FLUX "Coffee Talks" on November 29 at NCounter in Tempe from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and at Cartel Coffee Lab in Scottsdale from 4 to 6 p.m.. The two can also be reached through email at [email protected]

Budgets for all IN FLUX opportunities for individual artists and teams range from $3,500 to $50,000 and include costs of labor, transportation, equipment rental, shipping, as well as material, installation, and de-installation costs.

Arizona-based artists are encouraged to apply (note: opportunities are intended for those who haven't applied for public art projects) and projects will be selected through a public process hosted by the Scottsdale and Tempe public art programs.
