Chimp Wins 10K in Painting Contest
Untitled painting by Brent, a chimpanzee at the Chimp Haven sanctuary in Louisiana.
The Humane Society of the United States
Remember when the critics said your art was so simple that a monkey could do it? Well it turns out they were right.
37-year-old Brent is a retired laboratory primate living at the Chimp Haven sanctuary in Keithville, Louisiana. His most recent work, which he painted his tongue, has been making the rounds on the Internet after winning the $10,000 grand prize from Humane Society of the United States.
The painting, which collected the majority of the more than 27,000 voters, was just one of the many submitted by chimps at five other sanctuaries around the country, including second place winner, Cheetah -- a chimp who walked (climbed?) away with a cool $5,000 plus an additional $5,000 for being the favorite pick of reputable voter Jane Goodall.

And while this may be more bananas than your last gallery work took home, you can at least take solace in that fact that unlike you, these chimps don't actually get a say in how the money is handled. (We imagine if they did, it would likely involve feces.)
Instead all cash prizes will go toward benefiting the sanctuaries, which proved care and protection for chimps that have been freed from laboratories, the entertainment industry, and the pet trade.
Like any budding new artist trying to maintain his mystique, Brent was unavailable for comment. Said a Chimp Haven spokeswoman, "I think he's asleep."
Well played, Brent. Well played.
