It was George Bernard Shaw who mused, “Youth is wasted on the young.” We’d argue that youth is more about getting wasted. But once the blinding hangover headache clears, it will become pretty obvious that teenagers craving adult problems (as opposed to relishing glitter and giddiness) are all too pervasive. Consider MTV’s 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom reality shows, which capture the lives of girls who sadly prove anything but ready for adulthood.

Such is the case with Australia’s main character Tracy, a high school student who’s in debt to drug dealers and claims a pregnancy. “It’s like a grand opera,” says Duane Daniels, director of the absurdist, dark comedy that’s rife with backstabbing, deal-making, and power plays. Tracy looks for guidance from her neurotic, paranoid teacher Ms. Rogers before, Daniels says, “Everything comes to its combustible conclusion.”
