The German poet Goethe said that, “science arose from poetry… when times change the two can meet again on a higher level as friends.”

Times apparently haven’t changed much. Chemistry and biology are like the popular kids, rewarded with front page headlines and million-dollar research grants, while poor poetry languishes alone in musty libraries.

Like Goethe, local poet Tracy Thomas is the rare type of scientist who understands that the written word offers another way of exploring the depths of the universe. “I suppose my poetry is a reaction against my science education,” he says. “It’s my attempt to get at that certain something about life that’s impossible to express, that can’t be quantified by science.”

Thomas will wax poetic with surrealist verses from his new book, Runes, at The Trunk Space. The event will also include a guest appearance by local “godfather of poetry” Jack Evans.
