The word “circus” conjures images of elephants with glittery harnesses and spandex-clad contortionists. But take away the fancy costumes and sets and what have you got? A petting zoo and a handful of Juggalo rejects.

Not so with Circa, an Australian performance act that strips the circus down to its bare bones, opening 8 p.m. Friday, March 16, at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. The seven-member acrobatic troupe performs sensual choreography on a stark white stage, with minimal props and costumes.

Artistic director Yaron Lifschitz once described Circa to London’s TNT Magazine as “a little bit sexy and kinky – which we all are.” While the fetish vibe will be toned down for a family-friendly matinee, the evening performances are certainly eye-popping: be prepared to see a woman crab-walking with her head between her legs and another dancer poking her sharp stiletto heels into a man’s chest.

Fri., March 16, 8 p.m.; Sat., March 17, 2 & 8 p.m., 2012
