First Friday in Downtown Phoenix: An Illustrated Map and Guide for February 1

Art walks are more often about people watching and shenanigans and less about the actual art. We're here to guide you through both. Presenting our very own Field Guide -- an evolving guide to art walks around town.

From time to time, we'll introduce some of our favorite spots and dish out some insider information. If you have any tips or tricks, share 'em in the comments section.

Here's a peek at our guide to Downtown's First Friday for Feb. 1 ...

Mix Tape @ 6th Avenue Gallery Safwat Saleem and Sebastien Millon aren't huge believers in Valentine's Day, but both will admit to believing in Love.

The two local artists are joining forces this month for a one-night show of love, loss, and humor, dubbed Mix Tape that will take over 6th Avenue Gallery in downtown Phoenix.

"My thoughts on love, this will sound corny but it is what I believe: There is nothing else that matters," says Millon. "To live with love, kindness, and compassion. These are the most beautiful things we can give and share with the world."

A rather unique art event is coming to downtown Phoenix in time for February's First Friday, and its likely to be of interest to gamers or anyone who's ever killed an afternoon playing Ms. Pac-Man or Dragon's Lair at a local arcade.

The Artcade Show, an exhibition that will feature around 25 classic quarter-munchers and old school arcade titles that have been adorned with work from two dozen different creatives, is scheduled to take place at Phoenix's Parazol Studios on Friday, February 1. Local nightlife/concert promoter Nico Paredes, who is organizing the Artcade show along with his business partner Ariel Bracamonte, says the they came up with the event partly to help give some new life to some classic arcade games they've been collecting over the past year. Valley of the Sunflowers Paper Project @ Combine What started out in Spring of 2012 as a plot of flowers in downtown Phoenix has morphed into a beautiful art show at Combine Studios. The Valley of the Sunflowers Paper Project is a testament to what happens when you give a group of artists two pieces of well-made paper and free creative reign.

Dana Lemoine, Rachel Nore, and Kerri Harding spent months perfecting the process of turning sunflowers into paper before handing it off to several artists for the final stage of the project, and this First Friday we all get to enjoy the results. Read the full preview ...
