There are Frida Kahlo admirers, and then there are the Phoenix Fridas. On a scale of one to fan-girl, the 10 women behind the Latina arts and crafts group rank off the charts when it comes to the unibrowed surrealist. The latest homage to their creative inspiration comes in the form of the exhibition, "Celebrating Frida," which is on view through Sunday, July 28, and features pieces influenced by Kahlo's life and work.
In conjunction with the show at Burton Barr Central Library, the Fridas will host a discussion panel, dubbed "I Paint My Own Reality" (which is a reference to a famed Kahlo quote), on Thursday, July 11. From 6 to 8 p.m., the group's members will talk about how the Mexican painter has impacted their lives and work.
Gain a newfound appreciation for the painter and her adherents during the free talk at 1221 North Central Avenue. For more info, visit www.phoenixpubliclibrary.org or call 602-262-4636.
