You might be in the groove of separating out your aluminum cans, but Paraguay’s Recycled Orchestra goes next level with instruments made from landfill trash. Dr. Daniel Piper will speak about the group during the "Musical Innovation and Social Change in Latin America" lecture at the Musical Instrument Museum Saturday, September 21.
Piper is The MIM’s curator of Latin American and Caribbean exhibits, and he has overseen the museum’s collection of trash-turned-instruments including a cello made from an industrial oil container and a drum created from discarded X-ray films. Music not only transforms discarded items into instruments but enhances the lives of impoverished youths coming from Cateura, Paraguay’s shantytown.
The lecture is at the Musical Instrument Museum, 4725 East Mayo Boulevard, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Entrance is free with paid admission to the museum, which is $18 for adults, though attendees can pay $7 for the lecture alone. Visit www.mim.org or call 480-478-6000 for more information.
