Maker Bench No Longer Available For Public Use, Owner David Uhlman Says Plans for Maker Faire are on Hold
The Tempe based Maker Bench has closed its doors to the public after having to relocate to a space that lacks proper access for the community of artists, hobbyists and entrepreneurs it previously served.
Maker Bench opened in June 2011 and hosted many seminars and workshops in which its members were able to use tools and materials available in the space such as woodworking, metalworking and laser cutting tools, among others.
Maker Bench owners originally planned to move into a space that would allow them the opportunity to continue serving the public with skills training and other resources, but after complications arose with their space and landlord they had to act fast.

"We had been scheduled to move to a different space that would have kept the public access available but literally the day before the move the landlord and the company we were subletting from sued each other so we had to go elsewhere on very short notice," writes Maker Bench co-founder David Uhlman.
Maker Bench owners also won't rule out reopening their space to the public in the future but as of right now members of the company are focusing on other projects, including kits: "The Useless Machine" and Orange Desktop CNC Mill Kit.
"Our niche, having the most popular kits available through Amazon.com and focusing on curated startup/incubation has worked very well so far," Uhlman writes.
Uhlman also produced the Phoenix Make Faire--the popular DIY event for artists, engineers and other craftsman to display their creations. At the moment there is no scheduled date for Maker Faire 2012.
