Artopia and Big Brain Awards 2013 at the Monarch Theatre So we've all been to an art gallery before, right? A jammin' concert? A food festival? A circus perhaps? How 'bout a poetry slam? But have you been to all five in one night, at the same time? Me neither ... well, until last night at New Times' annual Artopia Event. It was a perfect collaboration and celebration of local arts and food in all forms. My imagination was blown on more then one occasion last night. If you missed it, here's a recap along the winners of the Big Brain Awards. Congratulations to all.

Pain & Gain: From New Times Story to Michael Bay Film In 1999, Miami New Times published a three-part series called "Pain & Gain" by writer Pete Collins. The story revolved around a gang of local bodybuilders with a penchant for steroids, strippers, and quick cash. They later became known as Miami's Sun Gym gang and quickly developed a taste for blood and money. On Friday, April 26, director Michael Bay premiered the story on the big screen, starring actors Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Ed Harris.

Ka-Pow Superhero Adventure Run at Freestone Park, 4/28/13 Faster than a speeding bullet (okay, maybe not that fast but still pretty darn quickly) Valley residents and their children adorned in capes and costumes dashed around Freestone Park in Gilbert on Saturday, April 27, during the second annual Ka-Pow! Superhero Adventure Run. Adults and kids alike dressed as Batman, Iron Man, Superman, Wonder Woman, and other characters from the comic book universes of both DC and Marvel as they ran through a course laden with inflatable obstacles. The hometown heroes of local enthusiast groups Arizona Avengers and Justice League Arizona also made an appearance.

Club Candids: Record Store Day after-party at Lost Leaf Vinyl collectors adore Record Store Day for its rare and limited edition finds. Running around all day from Revolver to Stinkweeds to the various Zia Records locations in search of the David Bowie 7" picture disk is exhausting, so what better way to unwind than having a drink or two?
