Out of the Box

Arizona's hardest-working female playwrights prepare scripts for Arizona Women's Theatre Company's annual Pandora Festival of New Works, named for the Greek version of the very first woman, who, when she opened her, uh, box, released all the bad things to fly out into our world -- except for Hope, which humankind was allowed to retain for occasions such as submitting plays to a festival.

The sixth AWTC Pandorathon commences Friday evening, May 18, at 7 p.m. with our favorite part: 10 Short Plays 7, the assorted mini-canapés of comedy and drama -- chosen by judges and presented by experienced thespians for a feisty audience who's never seen them before. With titles like Our Wild Corporate America and Bride in a Bathtub, there's something for everyone and nothing that demands a massive attention span (which we lack on Friday nights). The fest continues through Sunday, May 20, at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts with longer works as well.

Fri., May 18, 7 p.m.; Sat., May 19; Sun., May 20, 2012
