Cactus League Baseball: The boys of spring are back for this year's slate of preseason games, which continues daily, through Friday, March 28, at stadia Valleywide. On Thursday, March 6, the Oakland A's play the Chicago Cubs, the Milwaukee Brewers take on the San Diego Padres, the San Francisco Giants host the Anaheim Angels and the Colorado Rockies play the Seattle Mariners. "W X SXSW": Translation: "West by South by Southwest." The mini music showcase, a local warm-up for the mondo music showcase named SXSW coming up in Austin, Texas, features a series of live performances and related chat fests. Organized by Nita's Hideaway booking czar Charlie Levy, it takes over Nita's, 1816 East Rio Salado Parkway in Tempe, Thursday, March 6, through Wednesday, March 12. Franklin Templeton Tennis Classic: Formerly known as the Arizona Men's Tennis Championships, this tourney features a field that includes defending champ Wayne Ferreira, Andre Agassi, MaliVai Washington and Carlos Moya. Phoenix Symphony: Pianist Panayis Lyras joins the ensemble, led by guest conductor Carl St. Clair, for a performance of "Rach 3," a.k.a. Rachmaninoff's monumental Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Opus 30--Australian pianist David Helfgott's musical Waterloo, as depicted in the film Shine. Also on the program: Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet Suite, Opus 64a. "Ask Not . . .": Ballet Arizona rocks out and rolls over Beethoven in this "balletdelic" work, choreographed by the troupe's artistic director, "unbound baby boomer" Michael Uthoff, and featuring music by Jimi Hendrix, Sonny and Cher, Janis Joplin, Petula Clark, and the Rolling Stones. The finale, "Sinfonia Danzante," is danced to Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A major, Opus 92. Katsina: The Valley's Carol Duval Whiteman adapted this drama from the 1940 novel Sun Chief, a true story about survival, sacred/secular conflict and societal sins written by a Hopi scribe from Second Mesa. Actors Theatre of Phoenix presents the world premiere of Katsina; the run opens with a preview at 8 p.m. Friday, March 7, in Stage West at Herberger Theater Center, 222 East Monroe. The official opening is at the same time Saturday, March 8; more shows are scheduled at 2 and 7 p.m. Sunday, March 9. The production continues through Sunday, March 23. Knucklehead Spoken-Word World Tour: Canada-born author Peter Gault and New York City performance artist Amy Rachelle perform in this show, which sounds not dissimilar to the "Royal Nonesuch" in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. To wit: "Bodies painted and bedecked in flamboyant costumes . . . , the duo, nearly baring all, weave dialogue through an arrangement of spoken-word songs in what has been dubbed a 'psycho-sexual incantation.'" The tour's in support of Gault's new book, Knucklehead: A Journey Out of the Mind, and a related CD. Lost Dutchman Gold Mine Superstition Mountain Trek: The Dons of Arizona host this 61st annual lost cause, a good-natured search for the elusive title hole in the ground. The hike to the Weaver's Needle overlook in the Superstitions starts at about 8:30 a.m. Sunday, March 9, at Peralta Trailhead, located off U.S. Highway 60 east of Apache Junction. Related activities at the nearby base camp continue into the evening hours, and include the Dons' "legendrama" Superstitions' Gold and the odd "firefall," in which several thousand pounds of burning charcoal are dumped down a 400-foot cliff face--perhaps not shockingly, the 'fall is billed as "the last one in the United States." Crispin Hellion Glover's Big Slide Show: The notoriously offbeat actor (Back to the Future, River's Edge, The People vs. Larry Flynt) who once tried to boot David Letterman in the skull--huzzah--will be in town Wednesday, March 12, to host this oddball one-man show. It includes a screening of Glover's new film, What Is It?, which he wrote, produced, directed, cast (with actors afflicted with Down syndrome) and recently described as a story about "a young man whose principal interests are snails, salt, a pipe and how to get home . . . [as] told through the eyes of a hubristic, racist monarchy." Preceding is the Slide Show proper, billed as "a spoken-word performance with accompanying visuals featuring material from [Glover's] debut album, The Big Problem . . . , and from several of his books, including What It Is and How It Is Done, Concrete Inspection, Oak Mot, Studies in Rat Catching and others."
