Remembering Jane Reddin, A Rare Calvin and Hobbes, and OK GO's Primary Colors
Welcome to the Morning Buzz, a catch-up on interesting happenings around the city and country and a quick guide to what (and who) to keep your eyes on. We'll be here, first thing every weekday, to get you going. Here's what's buzzing this morning:
1. Recycling for Jane A year ago tomorrow, we lost a huge part of the Phoenix art community. Jane Reddin retired from her legal career to support the blooming arts scene in Central Phoenix, and opened Practical Art on Central Avenue north of Camelback in early 2008. Today, her legacy and store front live on with the help of her friends and business partners Kara Roschi and Lisa Olson.
The two are currently collecting accepting scrap metals, cans, and recyclable plastics during gallery hours. The money exchanged for these items will go toward one of Reddin's favorite local art resources, Phoenix Art Museum. From today until April 10, the two will also donate $1 for every new fan they gain on the Practical Art Facebook Page. "Keeping Practical Art growing is our very personal way of supporting Jane's dream of a vibrant, local, craft art community," they write. For more information, check out the announcement.
2. A Calvin and Hobbes Water Color Keep your eyes peeled -- a rare original (and published) Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson is going up for auction at Heritage Comics on February 23. The 13-by-10 inch 1989-90 Calendar Cover Watercolor Illustration Original Art (c. 1988) is expected to bring in at least $50,000, as a very small number of Watterson's originals have ever made it to market, and this piece is the only auction piece that's been published. It's current bid is $35,000. Watch the auction unfold here.
3. OK GO's Primary Colors Because only great things can happen when Sesame Street gets a hold of OK GO ... and makes a stop motion about color.
