Running in the Dark: The Late Night Race Trend is Coming to Phoenix

Not all Phoenix fun comes with dim lighting and fancy cocktails. Sometimes, there's nothing better than endorphins, sunshine, and sweat. Lover of all things outdoors, The Outsider explores the more natural side of Phoenix.
Running in the Dark: The Late Night Race Trend is Coming to Phoenix

22nd Midnight Madness 3-mile Run. The race starts at 10:30 p.m. on December 31 and finishers are greeted with hot chili from Sweet Tomatoes at the finish line and are encouraged to ring in the new year with their fellow (sweaty) participants.

The Midnight Madness 3-Mile is just one of several night-time races popping up all over the Valley and the rest of the country. And it's no mystery why these races have an appeal. Instead of celebrating with a big breakfast and a mid-morning nap, it's perfectly acceptable for night-time racers to turn a finishing time into an all-night celebration -- booze, dinner, and good friends included.

Only two months ago, endurance devotees attended the yearly Javelina Midnight Run in Fountain Hills, and Old Town Scottsdale has an evening run planned for the spring.

Las Vegas is building a reputation for hosting several night-time races, including this year's Rock N' Roll Marathon, and Nevada is famous for the yearly Extraterrestrial Midnight Run.

If you're going to go late-night, here's a few tips.

1. Try to limit your fiber intake to breakfast and drink plenty of water during the day so that your food has properly digested by race time.
2. Stay off your feet most of the day, but take breaks every hour to stretch and move your legs.

3. Eat a small dinner several hours before the race, and stop eating and drinking at least two hours before race time.
4. Be sure to do a proper warm-up before race time.

Celebrate the New Year like a runner. The Midnight Madness 3 Mile Run starts at 10:30 p.m. on December 31st at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex. Registration starts at $25. Visit for more information.
