First Friday visitors will schlep about longer than usual this week, thanks to the debut of the Gold Spot Transitional Bar & Gallery, where the spirit of "carpe diem" holds court. Fancy an oil-on-canvas by one of the seven or eight featured artists? Buy it while you're there. Have a hankering to hear Doc Jones play? Get there early, for the multimedia Gold Spot is as rare as its name implies: It's open only on First Fridays. Once the clock strikes 10 p.m., this Cinderella-like gallery transitions back to the vacant Gold Spot Market building. Like all good fairy tales, though, this one has a happy ending. Bar sales benefit the Roosevelt Action Association, which works to promote appreciation of Phoenix's cultural and architectural history.

The Gold Spot, 1001 North Third Avenue, opens from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, April 2. Admission is free; gallery goers must be 21 and older. Call the Roosevelt Action Association at 602-799-7720 or visit www.goldspot gallery.com for more information. -- Elizabeth Exline

Burn rubber and raise awareness

Sun 4/4
Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines. Corvette enthusiasts drive for a great cause Sunday, April 4, at the third annual "Corvettes Against Cancer" benefit for prostate and breast cancer research. Starting at 9 a.m., 200 'Vettes cruise the streets, followed by live music at Cocomo Joe's, 28244 North Tatum. And see one special 'Vette most people have not met: an AC Cobra -- one of only two in the world -- autographed by Carroll Shelby. Show off your ride for a $20 donation; call 480-538-8008 for details. -- Kristen O'Brien

It's a PJ party for grownups

Sun 4/4
It's not your Cub Scout's jamboree. Catch the grown-up Jamboree Festival of the Arts and see why promoter Benjamin Moline's events merit the badge "Skin Canvas." Camp out from 5 to 9 p.m. on first Sundays through June (April 4, May 2 and June 6) at Suede to see Jamboree's full body of work, including belly dancing, fire performances, live hairstyling and magic, plus permanent works like paintings, sculpture and jewelry. After the festival, camp out for s'more; "bed: the afterparty" throws back the covers at 9 p.m. Suede always feels luxurious at 7333 East Indian Plaza (just south of Camelback) in Scottsdale. RSVP to Benjamin at 480-970-7710 or visit www.superstar-ent.com for more information. -- Kim Toms
