Phoenix is brimming with creativity. And every other year, we put the spotlight on 100 of the city's creative forces. Leading up to the release of this year's Best of Phoenix issue, we're profiling 100 more. Welcome to the 2014 edition of 100 Creatives. Up today: 77. Thomas Porter.

Knock on wood? Thomas Porter will do you one better.

The Phoenix-based woodworker of Porter Barn Wood works with reclaimed lumber to create pieces like its popular sliding doors and teaching others to do the same with occasional workshops, and selling slabs of sycamore and birch (among others) to DIY aficionados and wood project pros alike.

I came to Phoenix with my umbilical cord.

I make art because because I have to breathe out to breathe in.

I'm most productive when I'm listening to 1940s music and drinking a Dr. Pepper.

My inspiration wall is full of master craftsmans' work of the last two centuries.

I've learned most from doing.

Good work should always take second place to great work(s).

The Phoenix creative scene could use more of their ideas to market themselves in non-traditional ways. It is drastically changing the way we see downtown, and that surge of art should most certainly be encouraged to thrive.
