Downtown Phoenix art hangout the Trunk Space has been a haven for nerdy pursuits since it opened in 2004. Over the years, the venue has hosted poetry nights, dudes playing chiptune music on their Gameboys, and geeks thumbing through bins of used records and back issues of comic books.
JRC says the event will feature a collection of things sellers and swappers have accumulated through their hobbies and geeky pursuits -- think movie posters, video games, collectible cards, or crafty items.
"This isn't for dealers, and it isn't your basic swap meet, let me be clear about that," he says. "It's just for people who want to sell any geek stuff they've been collecting. As a kid, I was into those Choose Your Own Adventure books. If there was someone who was also into those and brought out a bunch of 'em down, they'd fly out of here."
JRC is asking anyone interested in participating to email the venue before the event to make sure their items are simpatico with what he's planning. A registration fee of $10 per table will also be charged.
"I don't want people to dump out a bunch of National Geographics or some old kitchen appliances," he adds.
In regards to clothing, he specifically wants folks to bring their handmade items and accessories, whether its bedazzled jeans or wildly-decorated kitchen aprons.
Everyone has their particularly nerdy obsessions, he says, and the event is a chance to not only share it with the world and clear up some closets space, but also make some extra cash at the same time.
"Who wants to deal with eBay when you can sell your stuff face-to-face to some fellow nerds?" JRC says.
The Nerd Swap & Shop will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 4, at Trunk Space, 1506 Grand Avenue. Click here for more.
