Vintage market Sweet Salvage opened its doors last Thursday  at 4809 North 7th Avenue. But don't drop by just any old day.

Sweet Salvage is a vintage "occasion sale," meaning it's only open on the third Thursday of every month through the following Sunday (for a total of four days each month).

Confusing? Yes. Worth it? Yes.

The first sale event carried an ethereal theme: Midsummer Night's Dream. Each month the sale will take on a new theme, usually inspired by the season.

Upcoming Events

It's the work of Kim Rawlins and Katie Hibbs, who also own home decor shop Not Too Shabby, at 11649 N Cave Creek Road. Sweet Salvage is a curated emporium of revamped flea market finds from across the country, housed in a small -- but jam-packed -- building.

By arranging their revamped and refurbished pieces, Rawlins and Hibbs hope to show their guests how seemingly funky pieces can be incorporated into their homes. "It isn't what it is," says Rawlins. "It's what it can be."

Rawlins says her favorite piece is a Victorian sofa that's been reupholstered in a leopard printed linen with an intricate frame, treated with pale gray paint.

The one-of-a-kind gems come from Hibbs and Rawlins' monthly trips to California secondhand sales, and from a team of eight dealer and designer pals from across the country who hunt and gather items to contribute.

Between third Thursdays, the Sweet Salvage crew empties the store's space and then fills it with all new furniture, knick-knacks and art.

"It takes 26 days to build it," Rawlins says. "Knowing you'll have four days to shop creates anticipation."

The next Sweet Salvage sale, in September, will have a spookier theme, says Hibbs: a glam Halloween meets mad scientist in a haunted mansion.

Rummage through the new batch of goods September 15 through 18.
