Hmmmm...interesting. I'm glad I read this before I took my Les Paul there. Mr. Beck responded to me via e-mail. I can only say that the spelling and grammer of his e-mail look very much like the only two reviews here which praise his talent. Of course I wouldn't expect much more from Glen Campbell (really?). Nice try.
I took a 60's 335 Gibson to this jerk for a fret job. He sanded the neck and ruined the fret markers. He turned a $6,000 guitar into a $2,000 guitar. I wouldn't trust him with $100 box guitar. I don't know what his problems are, but he should not be touching people instruments.
WORST SHOP EVER!!!! Never again would I let someone ruin my near $3000 custom shop strat. He said a two week turn around! It ended up being over 6 weeks. I sent a custom shop strat to him to set it up and get rid of the little bit of buzz it had. He over cuts the nut and throws 9s on it. It sounds horrible. I included instructions to use 10s for strings on the set up and set it up med action. He sets it up with 9s like a hard rock Ibanez. And it buzzes horribly.
I paid him an extra $75 to ship it back to me insured with a tracking number. Guess what? He sends it back parcel post and for around $20 and pockets the rest of my money. No insurance, no tracking number, nothing!!!!! Than the excuses he gave. Sick wife in the hospital, twisted neck on the guitar, had to step away from his work since he was an artist so he could find himself. He as well told me one time he had started on it and than a week later couldn't remember what he had fibbed about. Telling me the second time he hadn't looked at it yet but will real soon!
After threatening him, I finally got the guitar. It stinks so bad that you cant wash the smell off of your hands after handling it. Thanks for everything Jerk! I have to sell the guitar and I am out another $250 for his crumby craftsmanship. Just another bull s&itter that has no talent and lies. Save your self and go elsewhere. Save your money, and your time.
Guitar Players beware of Rich Beck! Put your equipment and your sanity in the “craftsman” hands of Richard Beck at Beck’s guitar specialty services at your own peril! Background:It’s been nearly a month since I first contacted Rich Beck for a bridge replacement and set up for my LH Washburn acoustic/electric. I supplied him with the new replacement bridge and strings. Though his estimate of time to complete and $$$ was nearly twice that of others I had received, I wanted him to do the work because I had read that he was “da man” in Phoenix for guitar repair. Unfortunately, I learned that he is “da man” for excuses, double-talk, and broken commitments. He originally quoted two weeks for the repair stating that he was an artist and that he had many other more expensive guitars ahead of mine. Still, this didn’t stop him from requiring a $ deposit AND the guitar to begin work in order to “improve his cash flow.” Our 3rd conversation, (the 1st since I had given him my guitar), came 9 days into the repair when I asked him how things were coming along. At that point he had yet to even begin work saying that he was out for 3 Full days because of “food poisoning. “ Because of this, we would have to push the original completion day commitment back. I asked him if he would have it finished the following weekend and he said it “should be done by then.” 5 days later, I called for our 4th conversation (the 2nd since the “repair” began) and he still acted like he couldn’t remember my name or which guitar was mine. When he finally did recall, he said that there was a problem with the pick-up because someone with “little fu*kin’ Japanese hands” had installed it originally (translation: he broke it) and he “didn’t have time to go shopping for another one.” I asked him to complete the work to the best of his ability and we agreed that I would pick up the guitar the following Monday. On Monday, I called late in the afternoon and left him a message to let him know we were on our way. When we showed up at the house he works out of in Tempe, it took him 5 minutes to answer the door because he was “napping on the couch”. He then hands me a RH Martin saying, “here’s your guitar.” Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have a Martin (if it was a lefty), but I’m guessing the owner of that guitar might have had an issue with the switch. When he showed me my guitar, I would say we both lost our cool - if he ever had any to begin with. As it turns out, in roughly 3 weeks he had managed to glue the new bridge on, break the pick-up, remove the nut (it was taped on to the guitar), and lose the bridge pins. When I asked him for a return of my deposit, he said “Fu*k you” with the corresponding finger work and “take me to court.” In his defense, I was pretty hot at this point, but, in my experience with Rich Beck, I really can’t say that this kind of poor attitude and extreme lack of customer service is outside of the norm for him.The essence of my experience was this: Aside from being just plain unpleasant to work with, Rich Beck of Beck’s guitar specialty services is a waste of time, money and patience. If you have more of any of these resources than you know what to do with, then I would recommend him to you. If you don’t… move on. His “artistic craftsmanship” and professionalism have proven to be a distant second to his fragile, propped-up Ego.I may not currently have the money or relative fame I once had (or will have), but the music I make on my instrument is a critical outlet for me to work through the stress and embrace the joy in my life. If Rich Beck ever understood musicians, personal integrity, and the world outside of himself he would have remembered this. Sadly, he appears now only to look to himself without actually seeing the same.
Based upon all the glowing comments about Beck, was initially excited to take my guitar to Beck to get a custom setup. Unfortunately, Beck saw me coming a mile away. Over promised what he would do, significantly underperformed, and kept raising the charge. Basically paid a chunk of change for a bunch of BS. Will basically have to re-do/replace the parts he worked on, as well as do the stuff he said he was going to do but didn't. If this is the Best of Phoenix, probably better to invest your money in some overpriced tools from StewMac. Like the old adage says, if you want something done right, do it yourself.
