DJ Al Page is P-town's impresario of hip-hop. Since starting The Shop back in 2001 because no one was playing the true hip-hop he wanted to hear, the funky pool hall — the Hidden House, at Seventh Avenue and Osborn Road — where it all goes down has become the place for outstanding underground and above-ground DJs to flex their skills on the wheels of steel, and for old- and new-school heads to appreciate same. Friday nights are for Page's Friday Night Live spectaculars, featuring any number of MCs and DJs doing their thing. On Saturdays, resident she-jays Robyn and KGB rock the house, keeping it funky, fresh and as ill as an AZ rattlesnake. Also, you never know when Page himself will step to the decks and start mixing classics from a pre-nose-job Michael Jackson or Marvin Gaye with joints from Blackalicious or The Roots. Without Page, the PHX would largely be left with top-40 hip-hop nights sans soul or authenticity. We just hope the playa doesn't get a hair up his ass and move to Denver, San Diego, or some such shit. As long as he keeps spinnin', we'll keep attendin', drink in hand.

Considered.

and nope, a heavy pouring hand and paying 3 dollars less a night does not equate a "best" or even "better" title. I'm not sure if the Blunt Club is big headed or not. I do know what I would pay for cover on a Thursday night for a particular talent and they are always right on the mark. Paying 5 dollars to hear the same 25 tracks each Saturday night... Can't do it! Perhaps once every other month... :) As far as the live bands on Fridays- it's hit or miss. But I respect everything they're trying to do. Its just my little opinion, that's all.

The Blunt Club charges to high a cover, and their bartenders don't have a heavy hand. Danielle I can see your point, but consider this, Al supports local talent better then the Blunt, and who can forget when Damijiwa showed up and got on the Mic? I think The Blunt got a little big headed.

I have to say- I enjoy going to the Shop every time I go. The music is great, the drinks are cheap and the crowd is always live.

But to say the Shop is the Best Hip Hop night in Phx - overlooking the Blunt Club at Hollywood Alley on Thursday nights is laughable at best.

The song selection at the shop has not changed the three years I\'ve been going there. Yes, many of them are my favorite hip hop songs... Ms. Fat Booty, Lady don\'t tek no, every single Tribe song, De La Soul, KRS-1, N.W.A, etc... I go when I want to hear them. But I can not go back week after week. It would be worse than listening to the repeated top 40 hits on the radio. I would get sick of the classics that I love.

Blunt brings out the freshest talent, the best live artists and dancers... Their shows are legendary and each focuses on a new sound, a new aspect of the hip hop culture. This year was no exception. The Shop is in the top 3. They do a great job with what they have. But, Blunt Club is #1.

sorry.
