BEST NEIGHBORHOOD BAR, NORTH PHOENIX
Loft Again
Venue

Phoenix, AZ

This place has occupied the largest building in a strip mall on Cave Creek Road for almost three decades. Formerly known as just "The Loft" (until an unrelated place called The Loft opened on Mill Avenue in Tempe a few years ago), this down-home dive has all the accouterments of a one-horse town drinkin' hole, save for the dirt floors (Loft Again actually has some old, crusty carpet). Everybody seems to know everybody here, and the regulars have been warming the bar stools for years. In addition to the stiffer-than-a-corpse drinks, dart boards, and pool tables, The Loft also hosts live music most nights of the week, from such local luminaries as alt-country crooner Harry Young, cover band Phat Bastard, and acoustic rock/blues artist G.K. Mack. But best of all, newbies are usually welcomed with introductions to everybody, and never made to feel like they might be wandering in the wrong 'hood.
