Over the past year, craft beer has exploded from a rising trend in hipster culture to a full-blown phenomenon. No longer will an "okay" beer selection with four handles and 10 bottles do. Nowadays, you'd better have at least 16 tap handles, and your bottle selection had better be epic. Thankfully, husband-and-wife duo Mat and Sharry Englehorn nailed the beer selection at their brand-new downtown Phoenix brew pub. After an entire year of renovations to Mat Englehorn's circa 1970s office building, the bar and restaurant, with its 31 rotating tap handles, opened its doors in August to the delight of the downtown craft beer drinking crews. Here you can find selections from your favorite locals, like Four Peaks and SanTan, and some of the best from national breweries such as Dog Fish Head, Odell, and Oskar Blues. Aside from the great beer selections, the pub also offers a menu of unique "upscale" bar food and a killer patio for hanging out with a nice pint on a cool Phoenix evening.

It's not the fault of the business. Keep that in mind. It just shows that there needs to be plenty of education on what a brewpub is versus a production brewery, beer and wine bar vs liquor, etc. There are also restaurants winning bar categories too if you go by the license.

@BrianC I just want to re-affirm that ATAH is not a brewpub, you are correct. There should be a different award for them. They do not brew beer. It's just not the fault of ATAH. I've been critical of media getting it wrong too. http://www.beerphxation.com/2011/09/brewery-and-valley-re-defined-by-az.html As for the half dozen part, there will be a half dozen new breweries, some of the. Will be true brewpubs. That is to say, they will have no off premise distribution but for growlers. There are zero breweries in the valley that fit that description right now. That's the classic definition of a brewpub.

I never said ATAH was at fault. The fault clearly lies with New Times. They are the ones who should retract it and give the award to a real brew pub. If they want to give ATAH an award still they could give it to them for best pickled eggs. No one would argue with that.-yum

@olllllo Bear in mind that this place has been opened less than a month, has had its share of typical new business opening problems and does not brew beer and is not a brew pub. I can see why people are questioning the award. New Times should either relabel the award as something like best new beer bar or take it away and give the award to a real brew pub. Who knows why New Times did what they did, maybe it was because of advertising and maybe it wasn't. In any case Angel's Trumpet does not deserve to be given the best brew pub award since they are certainly not a brew pub. A retraction of sorts should be in order.I know how about give Angel's Trumpet the award for best if we brewed beer we would be the best brew pub award.

@BrianC Totally get what you're saying but it's not the job of the business to do anything. I agree there are much better candidates for brewpubs. The nice thing is next year,mthere will be at least a half dozen more.

Want to know how they can win Best Brewpub without actually being a brewpub? It's because the New Times gives awards to those that advertise with them. Not to those that are the real best of, that usually gets done in the readers polls. But hey, who doesn't love a place that has a view of a rent by the hour motel from the patio?

@SarahJessica I removed the post calling him a hater because I was wrong in that he said he did like that place. It was not a "nasty post" it just said that he was the first hater and I hope he was proud of himself. I removed it because as he explained he wasn't hating and I agreed.

Now back to the matter at hand: You said that "New Times gives awards to those that advertise with them" and I know this not to be true. I have worked here for 9 years and every year someone says something like this. IT IS JUST NOT TRUE. If you would like to speak to my boss you are welcome to call our main number and ask for Kurtis Barton. At this point I don't care if I get in trouble I am tired of people questioning my integrity when it comes to Best of Phoenix.

As for how they pick the winners that is up to editorial. I WISH I knew how they come up with the winners.

@hotchman1 You work for New Times? Is that why your previous nasty posts to hoptamuserectus were removed? Very professional. Please explain how a place that is not a brewpub can win best brewpub? Sun Up is a brewpub, Four Peaks is a brewpub, Gordon Biersch is a brewpub, BJ's is a brewpub, Pinnacle Peak is a brewpub, Rock Bottom is a brewpub, San Tan is a brewpub, Angel's Trumpet is a gastro pub. A brewpub is a place that makes beer and serves food. A gastro pub is a place that serves good food with craft beer. I know full well how New Times operate. Please give me your publishers name and contact info.

Well we now know what the NFL replacement refs are doing, working as New Times editors. Another blown call. As pointed out Angel's Trumpet is NOT even a brewpub. Mat Engelhorn should take the high road and refuse to accept or publicize this award as it is an insult to all the great brew pubs in the area.

If you had been following this at all, you would know that when nominated, Mat was the first to point out ATAH was not a brew pub and had not been open long enough to be considered for the waward. Not his fault at all... and why should Mat have to do anything but run a great establishment the best he can? Go ATAH!!

@mbrody3645 Well, that said I have lost all respect for ATAH since they are now promoting the award on their facebook page. I don't blame them for getting the award as that was clearly New Times error, however upon receiving the award they are now promoting an award which they don't deserve. By Mat promoting that he is considered to have the best brewpub he is really telling all the real brew pubs that they are not worthy. The award is clearly bogus and ATAH should be ashamed of saying they won it. Grow some class.

Not a hater but I agree with hoptamuserectus on this one, plus this place is just a bar/restaurant, not a brewpub...to be a brewpub you have to make beer.

PS Angel's Trumpet-teach your staff about the beers they are serving. Making you order by name and not number would help them learn what people are drinking.
