Jan Brewer "Kinder, Gentler" on Immigration? Republic Dons Kneepads for Governor

As the Arizona Republic was bleeding ink for Governor Jan Brewer's allegedly "kinder, gentler tone" on immigration over the weekend, what was Janbo up to?

Raising cash for her political action committee JANPAC by beating the anti-immigrant drum.

A January 17, fundraising e-mail from our scorpion-scarfing chief exec reads, in part:

"Arizona and our citizens deserve a federal government that devotes its time and attention to issues that the people deem important. Please help us demand that the federal government commit to a secure border FIRST before addressing immigration reform. Donate $10 now towards assuring our nation has a secure border!"

Never mind that immigration is at a net zero, or that JANPAC, which has raised nearly $1 million to date, does zip to "secure the border."

Nah, forget all that: the Mexicans are coming, the Mexicans are coming!

So give and give generously.

Profiting off the sufferings of the people you help repress, the true definition of scum...
Profiting off the sufferings of the people you help repress, the true definition of scum...

This is the real Jan Brewer, the two-bit hack who, with the assistance of her clever puppetmaster Chuck Coughlin, rode a tide of bigotry, xenophobia and nativism to the Ninth Floor.

In 2010, Coughlin told her to sign Arizona's ethnic cleansing legislation Senate Bill 1070, and she would be elected Guv.

She did, and she was.

She also signed the House Bill 2281, which effectively outlawed the Mexican American Studies program in Tucson.

And like many a crass, political opportunist in racist, far-right Arizona, she's never missed an opportunity to stir up ethnic animus, slander the undocumented, and help give this state the reputation it deserves as "Aribama," the state of hate, the methlab of democracy, the great white pride of the neo-Confederacy.

There were her sinister public statements about headless bodies in the desert and how most migrants crossing into Arizona are "drug mules," assertions that even her fellow Republicans couldn't embrace.

"You know Arizona has been under terrorist attacks, if you will, with all of this illegal immigration that has been taking place on our very porous border," she once claimed, hysterically, on Fox News.

Brewer derided the Obama administration's announcement of stays of deportation for the DREAMers as "backdoor amnesty."

And when the government began accepting applications from young undocumented men and women for the administration's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, she issued an executive order, barring DACA recipients from obtaining Arizona driver's licenses.

Yet, despite this long history and Brewer's ongoing, bigoted policies, a nearly-2,000 word, double-bylined article in the Rep would have us believe that the Brewer of 2013 is kinder and gentler.

Because Brewer briefly mentioned "human compassion" in her recent state of the state speech to the Arizona Legislature.

This, while DREAMers and their supporters demonstrated and prayed in the lobby of the state House.

"Those close to Brewer told The Arizona Republic that her new approach is by design," reads the piece, "and that it reflects her goal: to focus the last two years of her term on resolving key issues rather than continuing to battle over them. Her advisers characterize her as a `pragmatic politician' who understands political realities."

"Pragmatic"? Sure, in the way President Andrew Jackson was pragmatic in the forced relocation of Native Americans, aka, the Trail of Tears.

The Rep touts the fact that Brewer has been having "meetings" and "discussions" about immigration.

With whom? With local Latino activists, perhaps?

Rather, her confabs have been with lobbyist Marty Shultz, and with such members of Sand Land's congressional delegation as slimy, self-serving political whore Matt Salmon, Teabagger David Schweikert, and far-right wacko Trent Franks.

Too bad J.T. Ready's dead, she could have kibbutzed with him, too.

See, Jan's looking at ending her political career in 2014 as one of the most hated political figures in Arizona history. She'd like to change that image, the image of an intolerant, desiccated harpy hell-bent on terrorizing Hispanics for political gain.

And her local Republican colleagues would like to get a makeover as well. The times, they are a changin', even here in the reddest of red states.

Bashing Mexicans is soooo 2010.

Thing is, I don't care how many lovey-dovey, kiss-ass pieces the Rep writes, or even if Brewer starts hugging Hispanic kids in public tomorrow,

Some things can neither be forgotten, nor forgiven.

So when they plant Brewer's corpse, after she expires of natural causes, following a long post-gubernatorial life, they might as well write "SB 1070" on her headstone, because that infamy will follow her, throughout history, and hopefully, if the Christians are right, straight into the fiery lakes of Hell.
