Here's one reason to like U.S. Senator John McCain: He despises fellow Republican Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and he's never afraid to let you know that he considers Sheriff Joke beneath contempt.
Sure, McCain hasn't exactly been a profile in courage these last few years, what with his pandering to anti-Mexican sentiment, his flip-flopping on immigration reform, his "danged fence" political ad with amateur underwear model and Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, and his dumb, bigoted assertion while touring Wallow fire damage last year that illegal aliens were one reason Arizona has been plagued by forest fires.
Wrong again, gramps. Who just pleaded guilty for sparking last year's hella-destructive Wallow blaze? Two local white dudes. Which goes to show you that scapegoating Mexicans doesn't do diddly to prevent such conflagrations.
Still, when McCain opens up a can of Slappy Joe on the sheriff as the Senator did recently in an interview with Channel 12's Brahm Resnik, you can't help but like the cantankerous, conservative coot.
This is what he said when Resnik asked if he had any plans to pick a favorite in this year's sheriff's race.
"I think it depends on who is running against [Arpaio]," McCain replied, "and what the situation is. But I will continue to express my embarrassment that there would be sex crimes committed, and they were supposed to be investigated by his people and were not. That is an unacceptable performance."
McCain was, of course, referring to the hundreds of botched sex crime cases in El Mirage and elsewhere that the MCSO failed to follow through on because Arpaio had his boys in beige chasing brown people and ginning up charges on his political enemies.
Is McCain's disgust such that he would go so far as to endorse Democratic sheriff candidate Paul Penzone?
Anything is possible. Normally, GOPers like to align themselves with law enforcement officials, but what about when elected law dogs violate the public trust and fail in what should be their number one mission: protecting women and children from dangerous predators?
Well, that's when it's time to give the aged politico in question a one-way ticket to the old folks' home.
Or prison. Take your pick.
