Somos America's Reform Not Raids Powwow Convenes Next Week
How much you wanna bet Sheriff Joe pulls a raid during this meet-up next week of many of the organizers, lawyers, and activists involved in the pro-immigrant movement nationwide? Then again, if something like that happens March 27-28 during Somos America's Reform Not Raids Summit, maybe they should adjourn to wherever Joe's at and raise a ruckus.
The powwow looks impressive, with the speakers list including Aarti Shahani, co-author of Justice Strategies' study of 287(g) agreements, Local Democracy on ICE; Mayor Phil Gordon; Adam Luna, the political director of America's Voice; Carl's Jr. mogul Jason LeVecke; and many many others of note, as you can see in the press release reproduced below. (Hey, BTW, where's ACORN? Seems like they should be there too.)
The get-down gets down from 7:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., Friday March 27, and continues Saturday March 28 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Registration is required, and there is a fee, as they'll be serving vittles. Location is the First Institutional Baptist Church, 1141 E. Jefferson St., Phoenix. You can register through LaFronteraTimes.com. Contact Karina Guillen at 602-677-5670 or ReformNotRaids@gmail.com for more info.
Also, be on alert, because the nativists are sure to be there, and eager to cause trouble, as usual. They're like a rerun of The Beverly Hillbillies, but with fewer teeth.
NATIONAL REFORM NOT RAIDS SUMMIT CONVENING IN PHOENIX Mar. 27-28
Business and Civil Rights leaders coming to "Ground Zero" to push for immediate halt to Sheriff Arpaio's civil rights abuses and passage of comprehensive immigration reform
PHOENIX, AZ - National leaders in the movement for comprehensive immigration reform are coming to Phoenix next week for a two-day "Reform Not Raids" summit meeting. The summit comes on the heels of the Department of Justice and the House Judiciary Committee announcements that they will investigate Maricopa County's Sheriff Joe Arpaio for racial profiling and civil rights abuses, and two recently released studies condemning failures and abuses endemic to the controversial "287(g)" program. National and community leaders will come together to shine a bright light on the adverse impact the current piecemeal approach to the immigration issue is having on families, communities and the economy.
"Maricopa County is known as 'ground zero' for the most egregious violations of civil and human rights under the 287(g) program," said Danny Ortega, Chair of the Summit. "That's what attracted so many respected leaders and organizations to this summit."
"The eyes of the nation are on Maricopa County's Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the truth about his preference for headlines over community safety and the constitution will soon get the scrutiny it deserves," said Adam Luna, Political Director for America's Voice and conference speaker. "The 287(g) program has led to racial profiling and unequal justice in several communities around the country. Voters elected a new Congress and President to deliver comprehensive immigration reform and the days of delegating national problems to politicians like Sheriff Arpaio are finally coming to an end."
Distinguished speakers whose common goal is to seek passage of comprehensive immigration reform include Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, Tamar Jacoby, President and CEO of Immigration Works USA; Eliseo Medina, Executive Vice President, Service Employees International Union; Aarti Shahani, co-author of Justice Strategies' nationally acclaimed study, "Local Democracy on ICE"; Jason LeVecke, CEO of Carl's Jr.; Chris Newman, National Day Laborers Organizing Network and more.
The event is being hosted by Somos America/We Are America Coalition, LaFronteraTimes.com, and the Arizona Advocacy Network with support from the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Service Employees International Union, National Day Laborers Organizing Network, the National Council of La Raza and America's Voice. Those interested in attending may register through LaFronteraTimes.com. Questions should be directed to Karina Guillen at 602-677-5670 or ReformNotRaids@gmail.com.
