Better Off Dead

Colin Chillag probably won’t be offended if you say his works that currently hangs at Pravus have a perished quality to them. That’s because the painter is the first to admit as much. "I have a remarkable disinterest in the work," says Chillag. "It's kind of dead after it's done, so I have no attachment to them, but what is interesting is the process in creating them."

Interesting indeed. The works in this show feature the painter dipping into the surreal by taking stunning portraits by local photographer Troy Aossey and adding random paint splotches, removing colors, and setting up unexpected shadows. It's all done to bring viewers closer to Chillag's process, in which he sometimes uses paintings as palettes for future ones.
