If you’re unsure about the Arizona Diamondbacks being legitimate playoff contenders, you’re not alone. Kevin Towers doesn’t know either. Last month, the D-Backs GM couldn’t seem to decide whether to buy or sell. At first, Towers was selling (third baseman Ryan Roberts to Tampa Bay for some prospects) then he was buying (third baseman Chris Johnson from Houston for some prospects). On net the D-Backs stood pat, and their playoff prospects are still questionable.
The D-Backs will have to look a lot like contenders to win this weekend’s series against the Washington Nationals. While the Diamondbacks still are looking at a murky future, the Nationals have dominated the NL all year and look poised to make their first playoff appearance in ages.
