Death Toys R Us
Thats what our 2-year-old is wont to say, followed by So coot, whenever he sees something thats particularly charming to 2-year-old eyes. Its what were saying as our charmed orbs scan the not-quite-cuddly creatures on display in the Dia de los Plush exhibit.
The handmade creations are stuffed-animal-style representations of Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos symbols and icons. Theyre all so coot, but also sort of sweetly perilous, from Ronda Kivetts comically toothy Sugar Skull series to Sappy Moose Trees self-explanatory Scooter the Sock Monkey Skeleton to Heidi Kenneys Tim Burtonesque fantasia Rosa and the Devil (pictured). Other artists offering huggable death symbols for show and sale include Roy Wasson Valle, Serena Kuhl, Jared Deal, Dawna Jo Davis, and Spooky Daddy.
