Family Matters

Besides that infamous fear of public speaking, most people will admit to an ever-lingering fear of death. It’s the same fear that compels loved ones to mutter an “I love you” before stepping on a plane, and it’s the same fear that inspires gray haired baby boomers to buy sports cars. It’s also often the inherent power motivating creativity and the arts.

In Theater Artists Studio’s production of The Shadow Box, three terminally ill medical patients are living in separate cottages on hospital grounds. The Tony and Pulitzer-winning triptych follows the trio and their loved ones as they cope with the toils of impending death. The compelling plot, written by Michael Cristofer, touches on mental illness, love affairs, and family feuds while exploring the significance of the human memory, heart, and physical condition.

Fridays, Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m.; Thu., Jan. 19, 7:30 p.m. Starts: Jan. 13. Continues through Jan. 29, 2012
