To create a vessel, a traditional woodturner must find a chunk of trunk, fasten it to a lathe, spin the piece, and quickly shape it with a series of gouges. This process has been practiced by many and mastered by few, including the Georgia-based Moulthrop family, which boasts three generations of modern woodturners -- the late Ed, his son Philip, and Philip's son Matt.
Philip and Matt came to the Valley last year, and, thanks to arts maven Bentley Calverley's ever-powerful forces, select pieces of theirs will be on display at Scottsdale's Bentley Gallery through Saturday, March 31.
Fri., March 23, 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.; Tuesdays-Saturdays, 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Starts: March 23. Continues through March 31, 2012
