The art salon is not, after all, a thing of the past. ArtsAz and its director Ernest McIntyre figured this out long ago, and every month hold the FirstMondays Art Salon, an ongoing series of free public programs at the Burton Barr Central Library. This month's artist, Lisa Takata, is not only worth hearing from -- she's worth emulating. Takata happens to be a founding member of the First Fridays ArtXchange, where artists create and exchange work with each other based on a theme (this month's theme is "Lucky Numbers"). A commitment to building community led Takata and her fellow artists to this idea, and beginning at 7 p.m. Monday, June 2, she will not only talk about her own work, she will share her fellow artists' work as well. The salon will be held in the Pulliam Auditorium at the library, 1221 North Central. Contact 602-256-3521 for more information. -- Maidi Terry
Explore the paranormal anniversary of Roswell
Art space, indeed. An exhibition commemorating the anniversary of whatever did or did not happen outside Roswell, New Mexico, in July 1947 opens this week at downtown's Be.Headed Salon and Gallery. Milking the media-hyped mystery of the alleged incident, "Alien Technology" amasses works from seven local artists: Richard Bledsoe, JRC, Stephanie Carrico, Michele Fuller, Dain Gore, Chris Walsh and Abbey Messmer. The show runs from Wednesday, June 4, through July 26, with an opening reception set for 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, June 6, during ArtLink's monthly festivities. Be.Headed is located at 124 East Roosevelt; call 602-434-4224 for hours. -- Jill Koch
