If the historical fantasy flick 300 has any truth to it, Sparta was a brutal place where soldiers battled to the death in a filthy pit and took on suicide missions for honor and glory. The warriors of Greeces most feared ancient city are the inspiration behind the Super Spartan Race, an 8-mile run littered with crazy-difficult obstacles including a barbed-wire crawl, water cannon, and fire jump.
Competitors not already taking a literal dirt nap halfway through the race are pitted against each other in a Gladiator style wrestling match. The top three male and female racers in Arizonas competition will advance to the Spartan Death Race in Vermont, a hardcore endurance test the New York Times described as a cross between Survivor and Jackass.
